Memory leak and bad battery life

3 simple steps for awesome battery life on this phone (this is all that i have tweaked, and i make it 14 hours and still have 20-30% remaining):

-turn off wi-fi/bluetooth/gps when not using them (and the UI has two different sets of toggle widgets to make this an easy 1-click process)
-go into the data manager in your settings and set social networking to only update on wi-fi (unless you actively use the UI social networking features)
-go in to battery manager in your settings and use smart mode to set an aggressive data timeout when your phone is not being used (i have mine timeout at 30 mins during peak hours)

try these for a few days and see if there is an improvement.

none of those are acceptable to me, no matter how simple.
if this "smart" phone isn't smart enough to manage power, then it's not a very good smart phone IMO.
I understand you can't watch HD movies for 17 hours a day and expect to have 80% battery life left.

But I don't think it's beyond reasonable for the phone to be able to manage updating your social networking stuff, syncing your calendar.
getting your email, txt. phone.. etc..
these are all mostly small txt based updates.
If you use the GPS in your car, then it should be plugged in and in a dock.. shouldn't really be an issue.

The phone should be able to be used as it was designed WITHOUT having to resort to restrictive tactics just to get 8-12 hours of use.

if it's not, then there is some other sort of issue that needs to be resolved.

Haven't been around smart phones much huh? these devices battery are not designed to give u much. if u want all day service or more invest in a larger battery. these devises are data intrusive be lucky MOTO has done something about trying to increase battery life. I had a Dinc and the battery was way worse then the X. for a large screen large processor and consent ringing of cell towers and what ever else you throw at it I'm happy for 8hours.

I have been charging my phone with my storm 2 charger and when I switched to the one that came with this phone, I started getting better battery life. Try it

I had a lot of problems with mine.. then i took a lot of my live widgets off and it started improving, i'm getting a full day and a half's usage out of my battery now.

Same. Installed LauncherPro and pretty much have only 3 widgets running full time. I get 24 hours or more out of a charge.

I have never had any problem with battery life except when i uninstalled ATK and had some of the social crap updating. I get 30 to 40 hours per charge. I run ATK and don't use the social crap any more. Still use the fb app just not the live wiget. I also have wifi off never use it. GPS stays on but use ATK to kill google map after use.

I am very happy with battery life.

It all comes down to how much you use it. If you have your screen running for 8+ hours a day expect to be plugged into a charger before the day ends. On the flipside if you use it sparingly you can easily go 3 days without plugging it in. By sparingly I don't mean in battery saver mode never turning the screen on. I mean light texting, a phone call or two a day, and maybe a quick web search to look up info or something.

You don't need a task killer or anything crazy. Just understand that this is a beast of a device, especially the screen, and running it constantly takes its toll on the battery. Lighting up that screen and running the processor at 1ghz vs the 300mhz when it idles is just a nice quick way to suck up juice. Not to mention data usage of constantly sending/receiving data over Wifi or radio... Either use it smart or be prepared to charge it up. Simple

Guaranteed it wont go for 3 days. The most I had with my Droid X is a day and a half and thats right when I got my phone. Now it barely goes a whole day without going down to 5%. All I do is text and the battery life is horrible.

Here's some numbers to ponder.

You all think battery life sucks. Get a DINC that phone sucked the juice.

Mine lasted for 3 hours on it's first run after a full cycle charge upon running it down out of the box. It's on smart mode and all that. I started to get really let down about it (battery was why I chose this over the EVO), but then I realized, as another poster suggested, that I had been almost constantly playing with it. I don't expect it to last as long as my bb did, just like my feature phone before bb could last 3 days instead of 1. But I bet when I get a little less excited about it and settle in to normal use, it will be just fine, considering how much it does. We shall see.

another tip for longer battery life: if you dont use the moto UI social networking services, go to menu>settings>data manager>social networking options and set you social networking to only update when on a wi-fi connection. this is the biggest culprit for constant 3g use, and turning it to wi-fi only has kept my battery very high, as i dont really use the philblur for my facebook updates. if you do use the UI for social networking, then make good use of smart mode as others have detailed in this thread

i don't use the native motorola apps for social networking but i use apps like seesmic..should i still turn it to only over wifi? will it change anything

What is Background data under Data Delivery in Data Manager?

If you disable Background data a notice comes up and says that it will extend battery life and lower data use.

Is Background data needed? Maybe disabling it will save battery life for some.

flip it to wi-fi only. third party apps update on their own; the data manager only affects the native moto accounts

background data corresponds to all ongoing background syncing. this includes the social networking built into the UI, as well as your google syncing (contacts/gmail/calendar). if you turn it off, you wont get gmail pushed to your phone; you would have to manually refresh your email inbox to see if there are new messages. if that is not a big deal, and you dont use the social networking features built into the UI, by all means, shut that off. but if you want any of that stuff to sync automatically, youll have to leave it on

Thanks.

I also realized you have to turn it on to use the market.

How the heck am I at 40% after 10 hours of not using the phone in smart mode?(I even set the hours up correctly in the settings). I have gps turned off and data shut off after 15 minutes. I have the update, but Im beginning to wonder if the battery indicator is accurate at all.

I noticed a huge gain in battery life when unchecking the "automatically sign in" box for Gtalk. Before this my phone would be at 40% at night and in the morning be dead. Now it makes it through the night with 30%+ battery life.

I noticed a big increase in battery life when i ditched the Espn Scorecenter widget and also set "social applications" (aka the Philblur) to update ONLY over wifi. I only use the native android FB and twitter apps, and only use blur to pull in my fb contacts since for some reason the native fb app will not do this on my X. Only real problem is that I use the blur weather widget and I guess this is considered a social app since it now doesn't update unless I'm on wifi. Anyone know of a battery frendly weather widget?

I changed it to update only over wifi for social applications and gained nearly double the battery life. I also turned off Background Data.

Before I was at 30% after 6 hours of moderate use and today I was at 60%.
