Merging sms messages

Is there a way to natively display longer sms messages as one as opposed to two or three? My blackberry used to do this just fine.

The few long ones I've sent appeared as one. Are you sure you don't mean multiple recipients? BlackBerry handles that a lot better than Android does.

They show as a single consolidated one one mine too. Perhaps, as suggested, it's related to the distribution list?

Hmm I will have to double check it may be that my buddy doesn't know how to use his iphone and hits send by accident before finishing his text.

Depends on who is sending it. CDMA carriers like Sprint and Verizon have limitations on how long a single text can be, thats why they show up split.
