mesmerize vs. Captivate

So my friend has a mesmerize with 2.1 so whu does it have all the functions of 2.2. It has the built in task manager, mobile hotspot, the new settings menu, AND mobile flash. So why does the about section say 2.1? He is not techy so his is complete stock, no hacks.

Most of the vendors start rolling in new features to older versions... my buddies Fascinate from Verizon for example had voice actions working nicely in 2.1, which would not work on my Captivate until I loaded 2.2 ROM. Verizon did the work to port new features back, and that happens all the time.

The hotspot feature, if it is the stock one and not one of the apps you can buy, he may be paying for the option (you could get that too if you paid ATT for it), or it is part of his plan, or ??

But bottom line is, since this is all open source, the vendors sometimes (google sometimes) will back port features to older versions.
