Message on the Lock Screen

Hi All,

Apologies if this has been asked before, but I can't find anything on it (man look!)

When I receive a message that shows up on my Lock screen, and I press on it, a grey 'semi-transparent' square box appears covering half of the screen at the bottom.

There is no text or message within it, it's blank.

As a newbie to Samsung Galaxy phones, can someone explain what this is please?

I used to own a S4 and that always happened to me! it's almost as if the message comes through and its displaying on some sort of a widget, but no matter how many times you click it or hold it nothing happens. I dont think it has the shortcut feature to take you to the actual message I think its mearly just a notification
 
It is totally normal, it is the swipe area to unlock the phone. It has nothing to do with viewing the message.
