Message ringtone stop

We have a work phone that receives text messages that we need to respond to asap 24/7.
Since the default message ringtones are only a second or two they are very easy to miss.

Therefore we set some custom message ringtones that last 10-20 seconds.

However when we receive the message it plays the whole message ringtone, and doesn't stop playing when we press buttons.

What are we doing wrong?

Have you tried to pull down on the notification bar mid-ringtone? I can't recall if by pressing the volume down button it also truncates the ringtone, but I believe it only does so for incoming calls, not notifications. The notification shade pull down, though, should stop the sound.

You can also use a 'normal' ringtone and just use a 3rd party app to remind you at intervals if the message has not been attended. Off the top of my head, I know NoLED does this (letting you repeat notifications every X minutes) and displaying constant notification bubbles on the screen. LightFlow MIGHT do something similar but I'm not sure.
