Messages App (SMS) opens 1/2 the time I unlock my phone

Why does the app open automatically when I unlock my phone using the fingerprint scanner? It happens about 1/2 the time.

Pixel 3a here, btw.

I'm in the habit of closing all apps before I close my phone. Thanks though. Also, I get very few texts - maybe one a week on average, so relatively speaking I hardly ever open the app.

Can you try in safe mode if it still does it ?

No - been careful about that so as not to open any apps since it started to happen. The icon for Messages in the middle of several others anyway, and it's always that one.

I cradle the phone in my right hand and tap the finger print thing with my right index finger.

It NEVER happens when the phone asks for my pin and I use that.
