Messaging app(s) won't open

My stock messaging app won't open. It gives me the following error:

'The application Messaging (processcom.android.mms) has stopped unexpectedly'

I can make/receive phone calls and internet works fine. Other apps open and work as expected. The messaging app just won't open. I've downloaded other messaging apps from the Market, but they won't open either. The Go SMS Pro app opens, but it won't send the text message. I've cleared cache, it didn't make a difference.

Any ideas on how I can fix this?

Might have to do a factory reset. Are you stock? Rooted?

Phone is not rooted. Trying to avoid the factory reset for obvious reasons.

Clear the data on the messaging app?

Try removing any recent app installs and rebooting the phone.

I've cleared data and removed recent downloads, then rebooted. Didn't help.
