Messege sent has red exclamation point

My sent text messages end up with a red exclamation mark... why?

Do you have a data connection? Turn airplane mode, on....reboot, turn off. Reboot and try again. If that doesn't work, I'd suggest contacting your cell carrier.

Because they failed to send. Try resending. If you're on prepaid check if you have credits.
