Mic problems, help me diagnose!!

Randomly, the mic stopped working on my galaxy s3. I switched to speakerphone (to use other mic), nothing. Headphone mic not working either. This tells me that its a software issue, but after flashing a recovery (completely different rom, and stable) I'm still having the same issue. Where do I go from here?

Thanks. I've done so, wiped data/factory, installed new roms.. nothing

So, you are on a different ROM? If so, I would flash a stock back on. If this fixes it, then it is software. If not, it is hardware.

I've just gone back to stock, still nothing. I'm just confused as to where the hardware issue lies. I'm confident enough to replace most of the inner components, just not sure where to start. Any suggestions? Thanks for your time by the way.
