Mlb.tv on the Xoom

This really blows. They've had over a month to get the Honeycomb version out and they couldn't get it done. Of course they've always treated Android as the red-headed stepchild so I assume Honeycomb will get it version next year. I''l be damned if I'm switching to apple so either I get it for my thunderbolt or get playon.

I have a question about playon. If you use playon does the computer have to constantly be on and running for you to be able to view it on a mobile device?

This is the response from MLB this morning.

"At this time we do not have any information as to when the Motorola Xoom and Honeycomb devices will be supporting MLB.TV on the At bat 2011 application."

This doesn't sound too promising. I'm really ticked off about this. As much as I love Android it's the second class treatment that it gets compared to Apple that has me tempted to switch.

Thankfully I have my Roku hooked up to my slingbox and can watch games live that way.

Ugh... Annoying that they even teased us with and told us that it would be out by opening day and then basically said, "Oh, never mind."

Part 1: Hooray opening day!

Part 2: Booo no Honeycomb!

Part 3: Live streaming is working on my Dinc, so there is that at least.

MLB TV working just fine for my xoom. Picture is much better then during spring training.
It is very slow to get signed in but once U get signed in and select your game works great

i couldnt get mlb.tv to accept my password, the password field would only accept one character... blah..

and to the person who asked about PlayOn, yes your compute rhas to be on and connected to the internet to relay the stream to your Xoom

And i saw the "honeycomb optimized coming soon" gone, and stupidly assumed that ment that it was available and bought the thing, looks like i have to call and try and cancel.

He's right. While there is no optimized Honeycomb app I'm getting some pretty decent quality just watching it in the browser.

This is unreal. I am quite PO'd now.

Does work from the browser. Could be better with hardware flash acceleration, but I'm watching both live and archived games over my home wireless-g. I'm disappointed but not surprised that MLB couldn't deliver in time for opening day on a dedicated app. Should be a no-brainer for sales, as there will be tons of honeycomb tablets sold I. The near future.

Bummer that the MLB can not seem to get it right. At least the audio is smooth on the Xoom. The Atrix I have is all choppy and none of the updates this week seem to have done anything to fix the issue.

As a side note for the video.. an Atrix I have doesn't get the video icon as an option either but other phones I have all get the video icon option.. Could this be related to the processor?

This is slightly off topic, but does anyone know if purchasing the MLB at-bat app also gives access to Gameday audio via the web? I want to be able to listen to games on my work computer, but I don't bring my Xoom to work.

Thanks!

Howdy...so MLB>tv works through the website and no app available. Indians game starts in a couple of hours and I'm still on the fence about purchasing the mlb.tv seems like it's 50/50 that it will work on the XOOM. Any last minute yea's or nay's on getting mlb.tv for xoom

It DOES work from the stock browser. Unlike the Wintel PC version, you don't get the NEXDEF enabled features like jump to inning, etc. It should get better when flash player gets updated to enable Tegra hardware acceleration. A dedicated MLB app would also presumably add a better user interface and maybe optimized streaming. Some of the flash menus in the browser window are kind of hard to work with a fat finger rather than a mouse. Like any MLB-TV installation, you will need a fast wifi network connection to get usable streaming. I'm watching a game right now on a so-so wifi connection and it's maintaining pretty chop-free standard def streaming. With the current version of flash, it will work better if you run the player full-screen. If it ever warms up, I can see it now...beer, backyard, baseball on the Xoom...

Cheers.

Xoom or no Xoom I'm a big fan of MLB.TV. I had it last year and it's great between laptop, PS3,Roku,apple tv and others as wellas more recent android phones. quality has always been good and I use it all the time. GO RED SOX!!!!!

I've been an MLB-TV user for several seasons. I still remember the ill-fated "Silverlight" season, which was an unmitigated disaster. The current flash-based streaming seems to be better. The only real problem with the service is that occasionally the MLB-TV servers get overloaded and real-time streaming gets really choppy. There are some nights where you can't sustain HD-quality video. That's not the fault of my computer systems or wifi network, however. The Xoom seems plenty capable, certainly more so than my netbook, which struggles to decode the video in real-time. The un-optimized Xoom is still better than almost any netbook that uses Intel video, and the battery won't poop out in 1-2 hours.

Cheers.

Well this isn't very encouraging, from Gizmodo:

MLB Thinks Most Android Users Are Too Cheap to Buy a Baseball App
Sam Biddle ? MLB.com's online streaming is pretty huge among fans?1.5 million subscribers so far. But Android users haven't exactly been invited to the ballpark, with only a paltry 11 devices supported. The reason? Baseball thinks Android users won't pony up.

In an interview with All Things D, the head of MLB.com put it tactfully: "The Android user typically is less likely to buy, and therefore the ROI on developing for Android is different than it is for Apple...The iPhone and iPad user is interested in buying content?that's one of the reasons they bought the device. The Android buyer is different."

Different how? Different in that they won't buy stuff, is what's to be inferred here. So, Android users, do you think that describes you? Batter up. [All Things D]

Say what???? MLB should get their head out of their Astros...there are going to be a lot of Android 3.0 tablets sold in the next 12 months that have fantastic video streaming capability with the Tegra dual-core chips. They are ideal platforms for HD-quality streaming of MLB-TV. No one is going to buy their product until they support our hardware. My Droid 2 phone is simply too brain-dead to be an effective video streaming device. Not so the Xoom or any of the other Tegra 2 tablets that will come out. Not everyone is going to buy an iPad--the Android tablets are flash-enabled, and that's a big deal to many users. Right now Android 3.0 is bleeding edge, with only 0.2% market penetration. Those figures are predicted to rapidly climb over the next 4 years, possibly eclipsing the iOS platform by 2014. Our suffering in terms of support is the result of adopting bleeding edge hardware and software. When market penetration gets better, MLB may see the value in developing an app. Too bad they can't get ahead of the curve now and be ready for the influx of Android 3.0 tablets when they start arriving. If MLB had a usable app right now, I would purchase it, but alas they don't support me yet...

Cheers.
