MMS and 4G connection problem

I'm running CM7 7.1.1 on my VZW Thunderbolt. I've searched forums, tried everything I've found, not sure whether these two problems are related at this point, but here goes:

When I'm connected to 3G (or 1x), data, phone, internet all work fine. When coverage switches to 4G (which is happening much more often these days around here), SMS and phone work fine, but I have no internet connection at all, even when connected to 4G at full gauge, and when the connection "turns color" from white to green (or blue, depending on your OS/theme) indicating it's gone from finding and querying a network to being connected. Network status info claims "LTE" (4G). I've tried resetting APNs to stock, creating a new APN (strangely, whenever I try to change an APN port setting in a new APN entry, the entire entry automatically gets deleted when I exit the editor), most other advice I've seen, with no luck.

Also, I'm unable to send MMS messages whether on 3G or 4G. Also tried a few non-Thuderbolt-based ideas in forums but no luck. Kind of annoying but I can live with it, at least not as annoying as having a 4G connection and not being able to use it.

One other thing I can think of that might be related or a clue: the Android phone settings say the phone needs to be activated when I try to dial things like "*228", then when I try to activate it says "Problem with activation. Your phone did not activate ...." I've read this doesn't mean anything and that this activation isn't even valid anymore, but who knows for sure.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Have you tried flashing a different ROM? Did you have the same problems on the new ROM? I know that 7.1.1 had some issues which is why I never tried it. Did you wipe properly before flashing? I'm sure you did, but I like to eliminate variables where possible.

Hi mightyfacundo,

I've had the MMS problem on and off for as long as I can remember, and the 4G problem through all versions of CM7 that I've used, through a few upgrades. Aside from these problems, which I'm not even sure I can blame on CM7, I've been very happy with the ROMs. But if you have suggestions on other ROMs to try with this phone, I'd be willing (I haven't looked at new ROMs in about a year; was hoping for CM9 or for VZN to make good on their promise to upgrade it to ICS). I also flashed Pimp My ROM yesterday to see if it might help, but no luck. I'm also open to any other fixes/tricks I haven't tried yet.

I'm sure you've already tried everything I might suggest, but if you have time:

Flash superwipe in recovery
Flash a Sense ROM like ThunderStick Full Blown 1.1.1 (It's never given me ANY problems)

See if everything works the way it should. If it doesn't, I might think you have a hardware issue, but I'll keep thinking about it.

After a full wipe, I tried ThunderStick Full Blown, looked fine, except it would only connect via 3G, not 4G. So I did some looking around and found JELLYBLUR, which was ok and 4G worked in it, so I'm sure the full wipe helped with 4G: something must have been stored in the system or user data that was screwing up my 4G connection. Then tried LiquidSmooth ICS v1.5 MR3. Wow. Still has some known problems, the biggest being that video recording doesn't work at all (force closes), and I'm sure I'll find more problems along the way. But 4G is working great, I can send MMS again, and it's ICS, which is light years nicer than the stock OS and interface, and it's AOSP. It's really nice so far.

So I'm sure the wipe helped. I had wiped cache and Dalvik previously, but didn't think a full wipe was necessary. I guess it was!

Thanks for the pointer.

Cool. I'm glad your phone is working again. I know how frustrating it can be when things don't work right. And yep, it's always a good idea to do a full wipe before any flash. Here's the link for superwipe which I've tested and think works great: http://www.mechacentre.com/extras/superwipe

Just flash it before you flash the ROM and you're good to go.

Liquid ICS/Jester's ICS are really nice and as soon as they fix the little issues (netflix, camcorder, and a couple of other little idiosyncrasies), it will be my daily driver, replacing Thundershed..... And that's saying something.

Thanks! It seems like there's still a small problem with messages: every once in a while, a message will come back "not sent" even though the status bar says I have full mobile (and WiFi) coverage. But other than that and the known issues, that's really all the trouble I've seen (so far). Would be nice to have video rec, Netflix, etc., but ICS is really nice.
