MMS attachment issue in text "Messaging" app

I'm seeing some unexpected behavior when receiving attachments (contacts, pictures, etc) via the built-in MESSAGING app. When I receive a picture, it shows up as a 10sec video clip. It's only a static picture, but upon clicking it the media player shows up and starts scrolling the status bar as if it's a video clip. If I long-click it and select "Attached items", though, I see that it is truly a JPG attachment, and in fact can save it as such.

For that matter, the same thing happens if I SEND a picture...in the text conversation thread, tapping the picture I sent will open it up in the video player.

Having a similar issue with CONTACTS - on the iPhone one of the features which impressed me most was the ability to share a contact via text msg, such that the recipient could, from the text msg app, import the contact directly into the phone's address book.

I've confirmed that this still works if I send a contact to an iPhone user, but when I receive a contact from same and click it, again it opens up the video/media player?!? Long-clicking and selecting "Attached items" shows that the MMS attachment is indeed a VCF file, but saving it merely saves the VCF to the SD card, rather than importing into the phone's contact list.

I should note that in each case the originator of the text message was on an iPhone, but seems unlikely that should make a difference. e.g., when I text them with an attachment, things work as expected (i.e., (picture shows up as picture, a contact can be imported into the iphone contact list).

Any thoughts, has anyone else run into this weird behavior?

known issue. run a custom rom and if not cm7 or h8s2, push mms.apk from one of those into the rom you choose like unnamed...

That's well and good for people who are rooted/running a ROM, but is there any solution for people at stock settings?

if that's true, that blows me away ... that seems like a couple of particularly bad bugs in the handling of MMS text messages, I'm surprised there's not more complaints about it!

I use Handcent from the market and the issue is gone. Maybe it'll work for you...

it has been reported and is not limited to the gs ii. no other solution is available unless you run a 3rd party app.

I switched to the Go SMS app, but it, too, seems to suffer from this errant handling of MMS messages. Can you suggest an SMS app which handles MMS properly, or does the phone need to be rooted to handle MMS correctly, and if so any given firmware to use?
