I was surprised to see how many phones (Canadian prices on Bell) are over $1000. It isn't only Samsung or Apple.

Subtracting 30% gets you the price in US dollars.

Google Pixel 2XL $1300
Google Pixel 2 $1000
Samsung Note 8 $1350
Samsung S9 $1020
Samsung S9+ $1180
Samsung S8 $1035
Samsung S8+ $1115
Samsung A8 $660
Samsung A5 $470
Huawei P20 $750
Huawei P20 Pro $1050
LG G7 thinQ $1050
LG V30 $1100
LG G6 $1000
Sony Xperia XZ1 $1000
iPhone X $1350
iPhone 8+ $1090
iPhone 8 $950
iPhone 7+ $920
iPhone 7 $757

Unreal.... I know there are other phones like OnePlus in a value range, but they aren't offered by any Canadian mobile carriers. Carrier based mobile phone sales account for almost all sales in both Canada and America.

The Pixel is available on all Canadian carriers, but its only available to one US carrier as an exclusive. (that's real dumb)

Of course, carriers are clever and offer a lower up front price, and users pay the rest of the cost monthly over a two year contract term. Carriers market different up front phone prices for phones that are very similar in total cost.

I can tell you that prices are high in the UK too. I'm not saying that the phones are not worth those prices - I have no idea about that - but I personally find the prices of many high-end devices are enough to deter me from buying.

I was tempted to buy the Pixel 2 XL when I had decided on a Pixel phone; but there was no way I'd spend that much on it! So I got the Pixel 2. It retailed for $900 off of the Google Store; but there is, of course, the tax situation...

It's also easier to get deals when the carriers are involved.

The most I've ever spent on a smartphone is $665 for a Moto Z Force Droid with a few coupon codes I had at the time.

Since then -

Motorola Moto Z Droid for $120 5 months after initial release (instead of $624)
Google Pixel for $240 2 months after initial release (instead of $650)
Moto Z2 Play (Verizon) for $240 8 months after initial release (instead of $408)
Google Pixel 2 XL for $350* 6 months after initial release (instead of $850)

* It'll be $350 if I stick with bill credits for 24 months. Took advantage of a "$200 off immediately, additional $300 in bill credits" deal.

Are those prices for the base model or are you choosing the top ?
