Thank you for that and I'm glad your phone survived. As great as this is to hear, I'm thinking you may not have dropped it at all with the grippy OtterBox Defender case on it. Just playing a little devils advocate.

This case has gotten a little grippier over time, it's not as slick as when I first got it. Perhaps there was a coating on it that has come off.
