I was playing with Speak Easy speed tests today at home and outside and here is what happened. In my house, I only have 2 bars of 3G signal most the time. Phone still works just fine and my speed test showed a 3.63 down which is pretty decent. Went for lunch a few blocks away and ran a test again. This time I had 4 full bars of 3G, so I figured the results might be better...they were not even close. Ran Speak Easy again and I got a dismal .33 down. However, my phone still worked just fine and the internet didnt seem any slower than at home but it wasnt quite as snappy. Just goes to show you that the signal strength indicator doesnt mean much, so dont freak out it yours is only showing a bar or two.

I think what part of the issue is that three the phone isn't displaying the signal correctly whether you have good or bad reception. From what I've read that's what people are saying unless I'm interpreting them wrong.

Agreed, even though I show less signal I actually show less loss of connection than my evo. At work where I get crap service my evo would show 80% or more the nexus is 10% tops.

it has nothing to do with less bars as we all know how aosp roms work. this had to do with slow data speeds and no signal what so ever. i can verify this because my new evo running an aosp rom has zero issues and fast data transfer. the nexus s, not all models is flawed in some way.

What I'm more concerned about is that this phone drops calls constantly, something my Evo didn't do. And through 8 hours on battery, I look at cell standby, and it always says in the range of 20% - 50% time without signal.

Example: It's been off the charger 45 minutes at this point, and has 17% time without signal.

I would try getting a new device. I got a new one and I'm still getting about 10% without signal but I haven't dropped any calls so far *fingers crossed*

That sucks. Guess I am fortunate to live in a good coverage area. Havent had any issues traveling either.

I perhaps will try this.

5hrs 16mins
51% time without signal.

Why not call Sprint customer service. I have the same problem as you. My signal at home splits evenly between 0 and 1 bars. I called customer service and after talking to 5 reps on two different phone numbers, they are sending me an Airave at no cost whatsoever to me. I just hope it works as advertised.

Give it a try. You have absolutely nothing to loose.

I requested an Airave and used it for a few weeks. It sucks. It has the hardest time making a graceful transition from the Airave to the Sprint network (IE: Starting a call in your house, then leaving while still on the call) and ends up dropping the call 75% of the time. Not to mention you can't do anything else on your internet connection when you're on a call. Oh, and if you calls drops while using the Airave, you have to wait until the Airave decides to drop the call till you can make another.

It's not a good way to fix low signal issues.

I am pretty confident that there is a signal issue. I live in a great coverage area so I have not noticed dropped calls yet. But I brought an Evo to work with me. along with my nexus to see if there is a difference in the time without a signal. My Nexus s had 18% and the Evo had 4%.
