Most (not not all) Gmail contacts missing on LG G5 with Android 7.0

Noticed several contacts disappeared from phone
Removed SIM and SD card
Did data factory reset
Using stock LG phone/contact app
When connecting to Google account, selected Set up as new phone
Connected to only 1 Gmail account
Set to sync contacts
In the account settings, it should that all synced OK including contacts

I have about 4000 Gmail contacts
Only 700 appear on the phone
The ones that are missing appear to be the newer ones.
I am at a complete loss as to why.

Any assistance is appreciated.

If you log into contacts.google.com using your Google account, do you see the missing contacts there? Are there any of those that have foreign/special characters on the name (sometimes that seems to 'break' sync)?

Sounds like 700 of those contacts are in "My Contacts" while the rest are in "Other Contacts".

Hello, I think this might be it. I don't even see the My Contacts as a category in Gmail contacts web version. I have no idea why my phone would suddenly only sync "My Contacts"?

Is there a way to circumvent this default behavior?

I see in Contacts > Contacts Settings > Customize it is possible to select all the categories of contacts.

But I do not understand how this happened in the first place.

What silly behavior. This has been driving me crazy and caused several unnecessary factory reboots.

What did not seem to help, Maybe it is a specific character that is breaking the system.

Going to try and exporting/importing my Gmail contacts into Gamil and see if that helps.
