About the time I started having problems with the texting app (type characters, they don't show), I also noticed that the TO: column sometimes does not recognize contacts. Type contacts name It doesn't search contacts to show contact names that match (with corresponding phone number). It just doesn't do anything ..

I was finally able to pin-point the conditions under which this happens. If you initiate a NEW text message (not a reply to an existing text), holding the phone rotated to landscape mode, the TO: field does not recognize any contacts. If you rotate the phone back to normal portrait mode, it works.
