Moto G, 3rd gen, marshmallow - when I type a text message, typed characters do not appear. This happens periodically .. you type the text, nothing appears, but if you leave and return, you can see the characters typed.

Is this only happening with the stock messaging app or with any other texting app? Is it a recent issue? Google keyboard received a big update a couple of weeks ago, maybe it's related. You could try clearing cache for Google keyboard and the messaging app, restart your phone and see if the problem persists.

Stock messaging app. Restarting phone does the trick, but does not eliminate problem completely (i.e. it will crop up eventually again). Clearing the text thread seems to fix problem (again, for a while).

Never heard of such a problem. Do you have many texts saved? If so, delete as many as you can and see if it makes a difference.
