Moto G 4G XT1040 as a gift: no prompt to enter unlock code. Despaired. Help pls

Hello to you all. I found your fantastic forum and thought I could find some help here after trying all I know and all I found on the Web. I received a near brand new Moto G 4G XT1040 as a gift. It's locked on the Canadian provider Videotron. I'm with Fido. Before buying an unlock code on the Web, I thought I would insert my iPhone 5s' Fido nano Sim in the Moto G (with adaptor). The prompt asking for the unlock code never shows up. There's only "No service" in top left corner. I don't know what to do. I am a but confused. No prompt, no field to type an unlock code. Is there a special procedure to have the prompt show up? I really want to use this Moto G. I tried it before and I like it very much. OK, I use an iPhone now but I always liked Android too. Best of both world for me.
