Moto G Audio Stopped Working Without Warning; Required Restart

I think this is a bug in 4.4.2. Motorola said it would be fixed in a update.

I don't have the MotoX, I have an LG E-980 (AT&T Optimus G Pro), but the same thing described in this forum happens to me. I just got this phone exactly a month ago and I absolutely loved it. It came loaded with Jelly Bean, and the first thing I did was update it to the kit Kat 4.4.2 update offered through AT&T, and I noticed the problem on the first day. The weird thing is that most times I can fix it by opening my camera app, which is weird, but other times, the only thing I can do to fix it is a soft reset. I noticed that it happens most after a phone call, and sometimes making another phone call fixes it, and others it doesn't and I can't even hear the person whom I called... It is so random and unpredictable and freaking ANNOYING. First I did a search specific to my phone and couldn't find one thread on the issue. Then I decided to do a search just specific to android phones and that's when I found this thread and several others, but not one has an answer to what it is that is causing the problem. If anyone has a solution or at least an idea to what is causing the problem please post it here. And if I do find out what the issue is, I will post it here as well. Thank You!

Hi, I have purchased a Moto G 5 months back. Eveything works fine, except for 1 problem. Sometimes the Volume automatically goes to 0 (Vibrate) and I miss many calls. There is no proper scenario for this happening. Is there any setting changes for this or does this happen when any games are being played?

That happens when you press and hold Vol down. Most likely scenario ... small pocket, bag, case ...

hi, i am facing the same issue with my phone,it doesnt ring, i cant hear the other person when im on call, also the media player wont play any music, and the alarm doesnt ring, it would just vibrate although it works perfectly fine when i plug in my earphones. the phone rings out loud when my earphones are plugged in, but as soon as i unplug it, it stops ringing again and just vibrates .

I'm clueless right now, this has not happened before, i wonder if the app "Clean Master" has got anything to do with it. I installed it just a few days before this happened.

Help needed asap. :'(

hi i am facing this same problem, i would like to know if you got your phone fixed, and if yes then how? i too have made this account for this particular reason only. kindly help.

okay, great news... it does work after you switch it off and on again.. although it is definitely a software problem. i suggest rebooting your phone because it works.. i infer that it could happen due to some bug in the ART cache..using DALVIK cache helps if the issue is of bugs; or it could happen due to some software virus or some app cleaning application too..

the problem here lies that you cannot trust thing anymore, that is theres no guarantee that it wont happen again. i suggest keep a watch on your alarm and definitely on calls.. also keep checking for viruses.

you can switch to Dalvik by going to the developer options in the About Phone in the settings menu.
PS: Moto G is not that bad :)

I had the same problem today - January 2015. I missed several calls. So I googled this forum. Restarted the machine. Fine now. But I hope it is not going to be an ongoing problem.

I just had the same issue.
It happened in the middle of talk-to-texting an SMS message. One sentence it was fine, then nothing.
Suddenly there was no sign of the phone hearing anything (no pulsing red circle).
Also all playback sound went away.

It's never happened before. The only new thing was installing skype this morning. (12 hrs ago)

A restart fixed it.
The sound went out on mine aswell. It works with headphones, but that is all. I recently got Skype and that is the only recent app/thing that could've caused this. I can't think of anything else. I haven't had sound for about two hours now, and will try the restart. Thanks.

I'm having a simaler issue with my moto g it seems. I've narrowed it down to my music, games and other media volume. The ring tone and alarm volume is fine. But this issue is a nussence because I need to have head phones plugged in to hear a call. Or play the speaker phone on calls. I this problem is intermittent as well. I can temporally fix it by plugging in and removing head phones but that only lasts a few minutes at best. This only started recently so I think it might just be a software update bug... I hope

Hey guys,

I was having the same problem as most you guys had...
*sound cutting out during phone calls (earpiece) but works sometimes on speaker
*sound cutting out while playing music (speaker)
*proximity sensor not working properly

I really thought it was a software bug until I updated to Lollipop but the problem was still there.
So I took the phone into a repair shop and they found a lot of little metal fragments (I'm a builder and do a lot of grinding work) near the
earpiece speaker that was short circuiting the whole thing... So they cleaned the inside of my phone out and it's working like a charm now!!!
I know that not all you guys are builders but maybe somehow some small metal fragments also got into the earpiece because it works like a magnet.
Worth the try and it only cost me $20...

Hi.. My Moto G 1st Gen has its audio speaker not working. No ringtone..no media volume and no alarm and no loudspeaker. But works fine when a ear-piece is used. I have tried wiping cache and phoe re-start. No use. Then next week my brothers Moto E 1st Gen developed the ditto problem. I am sure this is software related. Any fixes friends ???

Motorola- please fix this on G and E.
Amazing phones otherwise. Love them. Waiting for Moto X 2015 to release to pounce on it. :D

Same problem here (Moto G 1st Gen 16GB with 4.4.4). Happened a while ago when phone did not ring. Rebooted and OK.

Happened again this afternoon. Phone did not ring, but was on shelf right next to me and I heard it vibrate. Picked up and answered call, but no sound. The caller could not hear me either and said that it seemed like the call was unanswered (i.e. still ringing), although my phone showed call now in progress. Ringer volume control was on max. Rebooted and OK.

Only thing I can think of was that I updated two Apps first thing this a.m. after switching the phone on (Avast, Office Calculator Free) and maybe these (particularly Avast???) might have got in the way somehow.

Hi folks, registered just to make this post. My dad just got a moto G as his new work phone and had a similar sound issue (volume sliders doing nothing for media/alarms/calls/etc)
I tried the reboot to no avail. On closer inspection, the speaker was playing, just really quietly. I squeezed the phone's speaker between my thumb and forefinger with a medium pressure and boom! Full volume.
So, wiring/connector issue here for my dad's phone. Might be worth checking out for some people on this thread.

So I had a droid mini and I had this problem continually and the only way to fix it was restarting it. Verizon replaced the phone 5 times to try to fix the problem. Of course none of them had ever seen this problem before and couldn't find any reason for it. Finally they let me get a different phone, which was the droid turbo but after several months of having it I am now starting to have the same problem with it. Has anyone gotten any answers as to what is causing this issue and how to stop it?

At some point while I slept last night, my Moto G (running KitKat) decided that I didn't need functional audio. I overslept, missing an appointment, and on waking, I was informed by the phone that I had missed my alarm. I've never missed an alarm before, so I decided to see what my audio settings were. Sure enough, alarm volume was maxed out, but then I noticed that I wasn't getting a little beep on the volume slider when I adjusted the phone volume manually. Going to YouTube, I realized the phone wasn't transmitting sound at all. Using my expert IT knowledge, I turned it off and on, and it has worked since.

The problem? I can't trust this thing now. I don't know what caused this issue, and while it's working for the time being, I can't rely on it for incoming calls to be audible, or for my alarms –*for anything requiring audio, really. Since it managed to do this last night without me interfering, how am I to know when it'll do this again? There was no warning of this problem. I never did anything to change the audio settings, and indeed, they were all at full volume. The only thing I did that made any difference either way was restart the phone to fix the issue.

If anyone has experience with this issue, please let me know. Just last night, I was raving about how wonderful the Moto G is for a budget phone. Today, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. This is an intolerable flaw.

I have the same issues and on 2nd phone with the same issues now. The speaker works intermittently and gets worse. It will work then go silent. Sometimes when watching a video when it goes silent the video stops. Also the window for voice commands comes up sporadically. I'm about done with Motorola. I've tried alot to fix the issue. I've missed alarms, phone calls that I can't hear....

The same things happened with me today!! I had the same problem, the sound wasn't working, not even when I plugged my headphones in. This is really freaky and a MAJOR glich in these phones. I too had to switch it off and turn it back on to get the sound. If this happens again, Motorala is getting an earful *angry*

I squeezed the phone's speaker between my thumb and forefinger with a medium pressure and boom! Full volume.

NotMungo, thank you, only this method was helpful for me! You are life-saver.
I've got the similar problem with my Moto G3 (Android 6.0.1) and tried all methods that I've found in Internet - even restored to default settings. I thought I would lose my mind, really.

PS: press it at the bottom, folks

My son's phone was doing the same thing. He could use his headphones but the regular speaker wouldn't work, no matter what we did. I grabbed the phone on the top and bottom and gently squeezed in a few places and it started working!! Awesome suggestion!
