Moto G no internet access through wifi

Hello,

I have a Moto G (with Android 4.4.2 and system version 176.44.1). The phone will connect to wifi networks, but the wifi logo in the settings menu will appear red and no connection to the internet can be made. At the same time, other phones and computers can log on to the internet through the same wifi network without any problems. I have wiped the cache partition, which after rebooting solved the problem. However, after leaving the wifi range and trying to reconnect to the same network again, the same problem occurs and partition wiping does not solve the problem any more. I have tried various other things also like rebooting, switching wifi off and on etc. none of which solve the problem.

Note that this is a critical issue for me as although i bought the phone in the UK, i am currently volunteering in Ethiopia where wifi acces is scarce, and thus very important to connect when it is available. As indicated, after performing the partition wipe, internet through wifi has worked (once) and other phones and computers can connect to the internet through the same wifi network without any problems so it cannot be router related but must have to do with the settings of the Moto G.

Thank you very much for your help!
Michael

Well it can be a problem with the OS. Some users do have problems with the WiFi on 4.4.2. I can't help much. My only advice would be to connect Motorola support if you haven't done that yet. I also have had problems with certain WiFi networks, where other can connect and I can't but I have never seen the red WiFi icon you described. So, does that happen to all networks or just one particular one?

Many thanks. I have indeed also contacted customer support and they should be looking into this.

In fact, the wifi icon is indeed orange (and not red) as you mention. This has now happened to at least 3 wifi networks to which the Moto G can connect but gets no internet access (and thus an orange wifi icon) while others can get internet access just fine at the same time.

Strange thing too is that o some occasions (as in like 5-10% of the time) the Moto G has been able to get internet access through those networks to which this normally doesn't work (this happened once after wiping the cache partition, and at one or two other times just completely random).

I've also tried a full reset since which didn't seem to change anything to this problem either.

Welcome to Android Central! I'm not sure if the G has these features, but look in the Wi-Fi settings menu for a "Wi-Fi Optimization" setting, and turn it OFF. Wi-Fi optimization is actually to optimize battery usage, and might impact connectivity in some situations.

Also, if you have a setting for "Avoid weak Wi-Fi connections," make sure that's turned off as well.

The Moto G does have those two settings, which you can get to this way :
Settings | WiFi | settings | Advanced

I was suffering from this issue but I think I have found the sollution.

tap on "settings"
tap on "Motorola privacy"
ensure the "help improve Motorola products" and "Enhanced device support " are switched off.

That should be it.

Hope wifi works ok for you now.

Cheers
Andy
