My 9-month old ATT Moto G (1st Gen) running KitKat (4.4.4) suddenly began experiencing excessive battery drain in the past few days (Dec. 10-12). I had been able to go 36-48 hours before charging; suddenly on 12/11, it drained in about 12 hours. Google Play Services were consuming most battery (21%); I turned off location and the auto sync on Google Play services, and charged overnight. Today, it was drained after 12 hours again. Google Play services were now only 7%, and Facebook was now the greatest battery drain (19%). Did some app update in teh past couple of days which is hogging battery?

Welcome to Android Central! That's always tough to figure out. I typically find that after a reboot, the battery usage goes back to normal, so it might have more to do with some temporary glitch that clears up after the reboot.

Root the device and download a battery calibrator.
This is a bad idea... It is a poor recommendation to have someone void their warranty for a "solution" that doesn't work. A full discharge until auto power off occurs and full charge to 100% is essentially the same as wiping the batterystat file, which is all "battery calibration" apps really do.

I ran into an issue with a T-Mobile account app and clearing the cache partition fixed the issue. Super easy to do too. Hope it helps.
This is a good idea to try if a full reset and discharge/charge cycle don't seem to help and it is far less bothersome than a factory reset... Note that this can take some time on the first boot after clearing the cache as it is being rebuilt, it could take 10, 15, 20 minutes or even more, be patient and let it so it's thing.
