I have both the phones listed in the title and I wondered how the moto g compared? My nexus 5 has a cracked screen and my one m8 has never been the same after the lollipop update so I'm searching for a new phone. With a wedding to pay for next year the moto g price is very appealing... Anyone used all these phones and can compare?

Cheers!

Re: how does it compare to nexus 5 and HTC one m8?

I'm wondering the same thing, I've had M8 since launch and am now on the hunt for it's successor. I don't know if we're experiencing the exact same issues with Lollipop but every now and then the phone will hang for a second or two, it can get pretty annoying. Anyway, from a technical standpoint, the 2015 Moto G would be a "downgrade" as we lose the stereo speakers, NFC, and move from a 1080p display to a 720p display. But thats certainly not to say that it's not worth some hard consideration, far from it. From what I hear the Moto G is a terrific little device. We must first ask ourselves how we use our devices, whats important to us, and what we're willing to go without.

Personally, the lack of NFC does not bother me. I've had NFC for years and never used it in my daily life. The speakers on M8 are no doubt superb for a phone, but anytime I want to watch something or listen to music I almost always use headphones, again not a deal breaker for me. The display however has made me think long and hard about the purchase. I haven't used a 720p display in years and I'm worried it might be too much of a step back for me.

Likewise there are some things I would consider an upgrade, even from a semi recent flagship like the M8. Chiefly battery life (although it depends on what you do with your device YMMV), and, at least in my opinion, software. I'm a huge fan of stock android which is essentially what you get with the Moto line bar a few truthfully handy apps from Motorola. And let's not forget the cost, $219 is a really aggressive price point for what you're getting. (Yes, I based it off of the higher end model)

At the end of the day it all comes down to two questions. How do you use your device and can the device you're looking at meet your expectations?

Best of luck :)

P.S. I would also recommend checking out both the Moto X Pure and One Plus Two for a higher end device that would still beat out the competition both in terms of price and performance.

Using the phone day to day for general tasks should be identical between Nexus 5 and Moto G3. However Moto G3 is a DISASTER when it comes to graphics performance

This benchmark is lifted straight from Anandtech review of Moto G3.
If you like playing big size 3D games on your phone, any last year flagship phone is much much better.
