I can see many had issues with a broken power button on the Moto G5 .

As long as the finger print sensor is in use and you keep the phone charged, the phone is still useable.

But if it does shut down, here is how to get it booted again.

I was lucky in that USB debugging was already enabled on the phone.

1: Download and extract the SDK Platform Tools for Android. This includes fastboot
https://developer.android.com/studio/releases/platform-tools
2: Boot into recovery by pressing the volume down button and inserting the charger
3: Connect the Phone to a PC using USB cable while phone still in Recovery Mode
4: If not installed already, install Motorola Device Manager
https://support.motorola.com/in/en/drivers
5: Open a command window on the PC (find command app or type CMD)
6: Make sure the SDK Platform Tools are in the root of the C:\ drive on the PC
7: Type the following into the command window.
cd: c:\platform-tools
fastboot reboot

The phone should come back on.
It worked for me and I hope it helps others.

I have now installed Button Mapper app from Play Store and mapped a long press of Volume Up to the Power Dialogue option.

So now I can restart the phone using this if necessary.
