Moto X (1st gen) 5.1 Lollipop: can't share contact via Gmail

Just updated to Android 5.1 and can't share contacts via Gmail.

Steps:
  1. Open a contact with the Contacts app
  2. Tap the 3 dots menu, select Share
  3. Select Gmail from the menu (comes up from bottom of screen)
  4. Get system message "Can't attach empty file", nothing is attached to the created email message

The workaround I've used is sharing the contact to Google drive and then attaching it to the email message, but obviously this is less convenient.

Anyone else experienced this? Know of a fix?

I have the same issue on my Moto X that's still on KK.

On my phone I can share a contact via Hangouts (edit: actually the only choice here seems to be via MMS) or as a saved .vcf file. Looks to me like the Gmail attachment situation is just a bug.

Maybe someone could check on a different phone to see if this is specific to Moto x.

It happens on my Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014) tablet also. Using the Samsung "Contacts" app and Gmail. Same error, can't attach an empty file.

I've got the same problem. It fails the same way on:
Nexus 5: 5.1.1
Nexus 9: 5.1.1
Galaxy S5: 5.1.1
Galaxy S4: 4.4.4 (so much for lollipop bug?)

Works just fine on:
Galaxy Tab S 8.4: 4.4.2
Asus Memo: 4.1.1

My solution after reading a couple of Google forums: unmerge Hangouts and SMS for the destined recipient, share with the recipient's SMS, then the best way I could find to re-merge the Hangouts/SMS was to go into the Hangouts settings and toggle the Enable merged conversations option off and back on.
