Moto X 2014 Anybody listen to this weeks podcast?

Re: Anybody listen to this weeks podcast?

Have a hard time believing there is lag with the powerful processor and light software. Moto is great at optimization. Where did you get this from? Post it if it's from a reputable source

Gizmodo's review (which is quite positive, actually) mentions lag:

"Flick around home screens or inside the app drawer, however, and the Moto X produces some noticeable lag and stutter. It won't ruin the phone for you or anything, but it definitely shouldn't be there."

Re: Anybody listen to this weeks podcast?

I haven't read this at all but I'm not really worried about it. I have found that "lag" has different meanings to people like if a page is still loading or a picture is still rendering, they think it lags if they scroll. They said the same about the first moto and I just don't see it. Every device can have a stutter, even the Almighty iphone. Some don't know what true lag is.

That's one data point ..none of other reviews mention it.. No lag on this phone what so ever ..I'm typing on it right now it flies

The final phone isn't released yet Btw. It's probably a pre production unit

Great to hear, thanks.

If every review unit would have such issues, wouldn't it be a bit strange to provide it at all? Perhaps Gizmodo's device has a standalone issue or something; would explain why no other reviewers (that I am aware of) have mentioned it.

Re: Anybody listen to this weeks podcast?

Active display, always listening, customized exterior, no skin, and you'll get android L within weeks.

That's what the moto x brings vs the competitors. If those aren't your thing, or don't matter that much, then LG, sony, and samsung all have combinations of longer battery, better cameras, better screens, s-pens, etc. But you'll lose...active display, always listening, customized exterior, no skin, and you don't buy a samsung/sony/lg for the android updates....

Yeah, that's about right. I have the Moto X. I bought it because I was looking for a smaller phone, and the Sprint version worked internationally, and it felt good when I picked it up in the store. The always listening and active display are nice gimmicks, but to me that's all they are. I wouldn't miss them as much as I currently miss wireless charging.

I do like the fast updates, customized exterior (although I didn't customize it much) and the light skin. But to me, the new X is just another too-large phone, and I don't see any reason to get excited. If they had promised a 4.7" model with either wireless charging or a longer battery life, I might be interested. But this one? Eh, I'll pass.

Re: Anybody listen to this weeks podcast?

The new Moto x is the Moto X for people who wanted a bigger screen on the original. Otherwise I think the changes are pretty small. It's hard to get excited about that, and I get that moto pissed off the 4.7" lovers crowd. In an ideal world they would release 2 identical devices each year except for size.

Sigh. Yes, that was my hope. Honestly, I'd be happy to see the large one WITH the small one, because lots of people like that size, and I think it would have increased the overall user base. But just a large phone? :(

It's not a small phone now. It's the norm hence average phone. There are very few compact or mini phones available. If it were 5.5 or larger than yes it would be a large phone.

Re: Anybody listen to this weeks podcast?

Quite torn between keeping my Nexus 5, and getting the new Moto X.

I really want a louder/better speaker experience. But at the same time, I love wireless charging with my Nexus 5. There are other little factors, but those two are the main draws of each side.

Thoughts?

If it's any help, I kept my Nexus 4 when the original X came out and have not regretted that decision. I really liked the software features of the X, but overall it was a sidegrade for me hardware wise, and I couldn't justify dropping cash on a new phone for that reason. If all you're looking for is something new and different and your Nexus 5 works fine, I'd personally be hard pressed to switch. It all depends on how much you value the added software features of the new X.

For what it's worth, the new X is an upgrade for me in just about every category, so now it's just a matter of when I upgrade rather than if. I still love my Nexus 4, but the battery life can get squirrely and the headphone jack no longer works. It also doesn't support LTE (or I should say I never bothered to hack it to do so), so that's a plus. You may find that the 5 works great for you for a while longer, at least until the next Nexus arrives or something flashier comes along next year.

Re: Anybody listen to this weeks podcast?

Depends if you want Google Android or Motorola Android.

Not much difference. Motorola only adds a couple Motorola specific apps. Other than that, it's stock android.

Wait for the Nexus 6. It's only a couple months away.

Re: Anybody listen to this weeks podcast?

Yeah, good advice. Doesn't hurt to just wait a bit to see the Nexus 6, since my Nexus 5 is, for the most part, serving me well.

Re: Anybody listen to this weeks podcast?

So did this end up being the rumored 'Shamu' or is there still a chance the new Nexus is made by Motorola?

There's too many microblogs posting android rumors to keep up with what's real anymore. I don't really want a phone bigger than the new X but a Nexus by Moto will be tempting.

Re: Anybody listen to this weeks podcast?

I listened to parts of the podcast. I agree with them in their disappointment. There was no need for another flagship to move into the 5 inch and larger space..at least as a standalone size. I'll have to see it in person but if it's comparable to the S5 then it's going to be too large I think. Pocketability isn't so much the issue but I use my phone for running/exercising and need to be able to control it with one hand.
