Moto X 2014 Motomaker - Verizon - What does Unlocked mean?

I know what unlocked means in the case of AT&T and T-Mobile as I understand their networks are compatible. That said, can someone explain what "Unlocked phone without a contract" means if I select Verizon? Is it simply a phone off-contract and unlocked doesn't apply?

Thanks!

It simply means you aren't using a carrier subsidy and agreeing to a service term by doing so.

For Verizon I think the wording should simply be "paying full price without a contract or EDGE"

Thank you, both! Much appreciated.

I thought you couldn't buy the "unlocked" phone for Verizon, as it would not work on any of their LTE bands?
I see the carrier Verizon is an option...so I'm wondering if something has changed?

Ya, it's confusing. I'm thinking the prior two replies are correct and the language used and how they display it is open to improvement.

I think when they [vzw] mean unlocked, they mean is capable to be used overseas with foreign sim

I understood from a vzw rep over the summer, when asked if my dad could use his OG X overseas they told me that all vzw LTE phones come unlocked, and that I wouldn't need to go through the unlocking process as I did with long strings of numbers for my blackberry storm (a 3g device).
exception is htc thunderbolt, could not pick up any gsm bands at all
