Moto X 2014 Noticed phone goes from 4g to 1x when making a call

Re: Noticed phone goes from 4g to 1x when making a call

Ok I guess I'm the only one that get's it.

The phone drops to 1X for phone calls on Verizon just like every other one does. Just that not all smart phones display it properly.

1x is used as a voice channel, that is why it displays like that, cause you're on a phone call. Other phones which do not aren't displaying it correctly.

My LG G3 does the exact same thing, as does my wife's iPhone 5S.

It's the way it works.

That's what I thought too, with my experience with the older Droids. For some reason, my '13 X doesn't do it.

I guess you are the only one who DOESN'T get it. Since the introduction of 4g they have been able to use data and voice at the same time. I'm not only complaining about how it displays it in the notification bar but it goes from a 4g smart phone to a dumb phone during calls.

If I'm not mistaken the Moto X is a single radio device, therefore if you are on a CDMA based network (Verizon, Sprint, US Cellular) you will not be able to do simultaneous voice and data due to the limitations of the network. Once VoLTE is enabled you will be able to do both since they are both on the data channel, as apposed to current implementation that places voice calls on circuit switched technology instead of packet switched.

Actually, simultaneous data and voice for VZW isn't available till VoLTE is enabled via a OTA update. Only 3 phones can do it on VZW including the iPhone 6, G2, and the S5 I think.

You don't get it. Its not just an icon display issue.

Disconnect wifi and make a call on you G3. While on the call load up your phone's browser and do a search - it works! You have voice and data at the same time (regardless of what icon shows up in the signal area). You can do this on your G3, 1st gen moto x, note 3, gs3/4/5, lg g2, etc etc. You cannot currently do this on the new moto x on verizon.

This is because the new moto x is on the 'cutting edge' of the transition to VoLTE for verizon - it technically cannot handle voice+data until VoLTE is enabled via a software update which is scheduled for the next few months.

No. Last years Moto X could be connected in a call and still stay connected to 4G. I just popped my SIM card in it and tried it. I can run the speed test app on the Moto X 2013 while I can't on my new 2014 model.

I don't know the exact details but I think it is hardware related... It needs two antennas so it can connect to both networks at the same time. Most earlier Android phones had this... I think the original Thunderbolt did.. I know the Galaxy S3 did...

I'm sure it added cost to the phone. It looks like the Moto X is doing away with the extra hardware and will just go with the VoLTE stuff. I would be willing to bet most future Android phones will go that route too so I don't think it will be unique to the Moto X.

Re: Noticed phone goes from 4g to 1x when making a call

There is a lot of confusion it seems...

All 4g phones have been able to do voice and data simultaneously on Verizon. Some have even been able to do voice+3g simultaneously.

The question is whether or not the 2014 x can do voice+data currently and what the volte update will change. It sound like the x cannot voice+data at all right now and will only be able to after the update when on volte

Edit: All phones except the Iphones have been able to voice+data on verizon. All 4g android phones have been able too though

Exactly!!! 👍

Re: Noticed phone goes from 4g to 1x when making a call

I guess I should have tried out my phones first. I learned 2 things. You can do voice and data simultaneously on Verizon. And my old Droid 4 is slower than molasses. However, when I used my D4 in the past, it used to do what the new X does. It showed the 1x during a call and data was not available even when I had 4G. So in other words, it wasn't always available to me in the beginning which is why I thought it wasn't possible.

Re: Noticed phone goes from 4g to 1x when making a call

Just adding to this, my Note 3 on VZW stays on 4G LTE when I'm on a phone call.

Ok so typing from a Verizon 2014 x here. No voice+data currently...

I think the question is how everyone is explaining it which is confusing everyone.

Your Note 3 is going to 1x for the voice call, it's just phone isn't properly displaying it. Phones cannot make calls over LTE (except VoLTE). SO when you make a call, the phone downshifts to 1x which is the CDMA radio. LTE is only used to data. (again not referring to VoLTE)

So your Note 3 may be saying 4G, but that just means LTE for data, the call is definitely being placed on CDMA 1x.

I guess it's irrelevant to the issues with the new Moto X, but I guess I just felt the need to properly explain the process in general.

Yep, makes total sense now the way you explained it. I was a little confused by some of the previous posts.

Last year's X can. Not sure why it won't this year.

It is because last year VoLTE/Advanced Calling/Whatever wasn't on the radar, so get get simultaneous voice and data working they had to put more hardware in the Moto X 1st Gen. With VoLTE right around the corner now they didn't put that extra hardware in.

Doing so might have increased costs because basically Moto had to create a specific model just for the Verizon/Sprint/US Cellular market to get devices to connect to the old CDMA network at the same time. Now they can make less versions of the same device.

It's also possible that VoLTE was originally supposed to launch with the Moto X but it didn't make it in time.

I'm just speculating and didn't even stay in a Holiday Inn last night, so who knows. :)

Re: Noticed phone goes from 4g to 1x when making a call

Just for kicks, I made a call using the Google Hangouts Dialer, and it stayed (as expected) on 4G. I was able to use data while on the call. So while I wait for the VoLTE update to come to the Moto X (Hopefully with android L in Nov:), if I need to be on data while on a call, I'll hang up on the call, and call back using Google Hangouts dialer.

That's pretty much my workaround too although I'm not thrilled about it. My biggest issue is needing to be on a conference call and tethering my laptop at the same time. I can dial into a conference call from google dialer no problem...I use it at home sometimes too.

The other item that worries me is not specific to the moto x. But it's whether verizon's 4g network is expansive enough where *I* need it to not drop calls every 10 minutes once VoLTE is enabled.

That's a great point. While I'm on 4G most of the time, I do see devices drop to 3G from time to time. Until they kill 3G and replace those bands with 4G I bet we will have those type of problems.
