Moto X Pure Edition: Various Reviews

I'm gonna wait a week or more before passing final judgement though.

Later reviews are often more trustworthy and more thorough.

I saw a review by some pathetic channel called The Verge. Awful. They called the Moto X Pure a "mid-ranged" device.

Can't tell if sarcastic or not, but The Verge is one of the more highly regarded reputable tech news sites around; even if they may be Apple fanboys at times.

You can't expect every reviewer to call it the best thing ever and everything else sucks.

Of course not. That's a straw man. I don't expect a respected reviewer to totally misrepresent the device like that though.

I agree with you. It is a flagship phone at mid-tier prices. Everything about it is flagship. Screen. Camera. Battery. Build. Storage. But not price. These are the same specs (aside from removable battery) that made the LG G4 a flagship, yet this is mid-range? The build on the X is light years ahead of the G4. Now the camera is probably nicer on the G4, but I don't see where this is a mid-tier/mid-range phone - other than price.

A lot of folks here will probably have their devices before we see another review, since they might not be getting review units.

At least they gave it 8.6 as their score. Considering it isn't an iPhone, that's pretty good.

I don't understand how they could give it an 8.6 and call it a mid range phone. Seems kind of high for a non flag ship phone.

It's funny HTC can introduce a phone with so so camera and it's a flag ship ? But Motorola can do the same thing for less money and it's mid range ??

What the media seems to forget is the current pricing models are based on the subsidies and the artificially high retail prices to lure people into contract plans for the subsidies. With Verizon being the first biggie to go away from our for new contracts, seems the retail pricing should adjust down accordingly.

Verizon has done Apple and especially Samsung no favors with the change.

Lotta discussion about purchasing the Moto X Pure while living in Canada on Reddit. Here's one recent thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/MotoX/comments/3jstiz/moto_x_pure_edition_purchase_story/

moto x pure not being as fast as other flagships???

Hey folks

I hope everyone is as excited as I am to get my new moto x pure and start tinkering. However there is one issue i came across today that is somewhat troubling. I have seen on other tech sites that have early reviews are reporting that the new moto is not as "snappy" as say the s6. they are reporting that the animations are slower and takes longer to open apps, app drawer etc. How many of you think this is true? What i'm not understanding is how can that be when the g4 has the same processor and performs as well as other flagships. This is a phone that has a very light skin close to stock and people are saying its slow againt the s6 with a heavy skin. I find this alarming. Do you think the new moto x is not optimized as well as the previous generations and maybe runs slower? Which i hope is not the case.

feel free to chime in!! thanks

Re: moto x pure not being as fast as other flagships???

I think that with Android M incoming, Moto decided to put man hours on getting that right than focusing on the already broken lollipop.

Re: moto x pure not being as fast as other flagships???

I think it is total BS. I recently switched from a 2014 Moto x to a Galaxy S6 active. I made the switch for better battery life and a better camera. What I got was a phone that is so slow it feels broken. I have not had a phone with so much lag since my palm Centro. I am counting down the minutes until I can get my new Moto x pure edition!

There aren't any good reviews out yet. Those reviews could of been using prereleased software. With any MotoX, it has always been up to speed even to phones that are released the year after. The MotoX in 2013 was just as snappier then the s5.

You can't be serious? I had moto x 2014 and galaxy s6 and s6 is definitely a lot faster device. How do you explain that lg g4 is faster than nearly stock one plus two?

Depends when you had your 2014 X. If it was running Android 5.0.1, then yes, almost anything was faster. However, 5.1 fixed those problems.

Re: moto x pure not being as fast as other flagships???

Ya this is my biggest worry about this phone. I know battery and camera are all the rage nowadays but I'm a wall hugger and don't take many pics, but a smooth fast experience is really important to me. A couple reviews have mentioned how it's not as fast as other flagships but no one has mentioned what that even means. Does it stutter and lag or are the animations simply slow, the nexus 9 drove me crazy with it taking forever to open some apps up and then redrawing of the home screens upon exit. Returned it and got an iPad Air instead, it is butter. I also have a nexus 6 and it too is butter. Hell my nexus 5 backup phone is also smooth and faster than the nexus 6.

I worry that the QHD screen will be too much of an impact on the performance. The GPU on the 808,according to anandtech, is closer to the snapdragon 800 in performance and not as good as the 420 in the nexus 6. I was pumped about an lcd screen, and was hopeful for 1080p resolution, in my experience amoled benefits more from higher resolution and lcd is sharper to me at the same resolution. I can't wait for real user reviews of this thing, love my 6 but it is huge the narrower Moto X Pure seems like a "perfect" size

Re: moto x pure not being as fast as other flagships???

I think reviewers are getting the difference between performance and animation speed mixed. Stock Android most likely has a different default animation speed compared to Samsung and LG skins which may have them sped up to look like its faster. If you enable developer settings on the Moto X you can change the animation speed manually to draw faster which gives the illusion that the phone is running 'faster'. Not really a big deal.
