moto X question - OS update

Currently have a Samsung S3, looking for an upgrade. One thing that I don't like about Samsung is they put their own twist to the OS and not guaranteed to get a new update. With the MotoX since they don't add to the OS, once a new version comes out, would the Moto X get it automatically or does Motorola still push the updates to the phones?

Moto will push the update as they have to integrate some of their stuff into it but their track record on timely updates has been very very good. Nothing like the delays you get with Samsung. Been there, done that!.

Aside from Nexus devices, Moto phones are the fastest at getting updates and they do support the device after a while.

I've had 3 Motorola smart phones and they all got supported for a couple of years in a timely manor. My RAZR HD (2 years old) was running 4.4.2 Kit Kat. It came out not long after the S3.

With the first Android L devices supposedly allegedly to be available in late October or November, is there any advantage to waiting until the Moto X can be ordered with L preloaded? What are the chances the X'14 with L preloaded will be available around the holiday discount season?

I don't see any advantage to waiting until Android L comes preloaded. The only advantage I can see to waiting is for the price to come down, which it inevitably will.

It sounds like Motorola will push it out fairly quickly, BUT the carrier (VZW, AT&T, or whoever) can delay it while they test it with their apps. It's my understanding that the fastest will probably be their Pure Edition since that has NO carrier bloat nor does it go through any carrier.

Depending on your carrier it would take about 4-6 weeks for you to get the update but you will get them all, including the incremental updates (i.e. 4.4 - > 4.4.4). Motorola will push them out to the carrier within a couple of weeks and the carrier will take the remainder of that time to push it to you after they've tested it.

I had a GS3 for nearly 2 years before my 2013 Moto X and I think during that time the phone got two updates IIRC and it took a long time for each. The Moto software experience is soooo much better that Samsung's IMO.

I have a follow-up question: I bought an unlocked Moto X and use it off contract on AT&T. When Android L comes out, will I get it through AT&T and if so, will it come with AT&T firmware attached? Part of the reason that I spent the extra $ for the unlocked version was to avoid firmware, so I would be disappointed to find out that AT&T could sneak it through the backdoor via an update... Thanks in advance.

Straight from moto, carrier bloat will not be added.

You should get it directly from moto without any att interference. Att has no control over an unlocked device regardless of whether it uses their network or not.

Sometimes when you join the Motorola Feedback Network you get them the day before. Not always.
