Hi all,
I had a question regarding my new Moto X that I was hoping y'all could help me with. I just got my Moto X a week ago on verizon, and I was super excited about the battery life and the reports of full day usage and more. Unfortunately, I have found myself having to plug in at about 8 oclock every night from having a 10 percent battery. I am not a heavy user, I use it to browse the web and facebook for about 2 to 3 hours a day, I have so far left wifi on, bt off, gps on, touchless control on, active notifs on, etc. I have yet to make it to the end of a 14 day without a charge. Is there something wrong with my Moto X? Should I take it back for a new one? The only thing I can think of that would influence the battery life negatively is that my school's wifi is weird, and it seems to have to disconnect and reconnect a relative lot. I didn't make it through a day, though, where wifi was off and I was not at school. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Signal strength and consistency is a huge factor. Screen time is usually the single biggest drain. What are you getting there? If auto brightness is on, I'd recommend turning that off.

Personally that's pretty good battery life. I'm getting 5-7hrs screen time with 10-13hrs use. With this size of battery I'm not sure where you can get much battery.

Yeah screen comes out of the same battery so total hours is negatively correlated to increases in screen use.

Do you talk on the phone quite a bit? i'm getting about 4.5-5 hours screen time when i'm not doing much phone activity, 17 hours altogether, but when i talk on the phone for a phew hours it goes down to about 4 hours screen time, and a little less total hours. But when i talk on the phone as well, like i did yesterday for like 3 hours, :p!, then my screen time was less. I have my screen on autodisplay and make sure that i keep my 3G on when i'm in a place where i'm stuggling for 4G. So yours doesn't sound that much different. At work, for about 9 hours, i don't use the phone that much at all.

Do what now?

Haha

He's saying that total time is affected by screen on time. I believe the suggestion here is that the op is getting under 14hrs cause hes using 3hrs screen time. I feel like you knew this haha but the wording was rather botchy

(snip)......is that my school's wifi is weird, and it seems to have to disconnect and reconnect a relative lot....(snip)

As far as your WiFi's disconnecting and reconnecting at school make sure that :Settings>Wi-Fi>Advanced >Keep Wi-Fi on during Sleep> is ticked to Always.
That way when your screen goes to sleep WIFi's wont disconnect and wont have to reconnect ever time your screen comes back on

Thanks for the responses, I did another average day, I got 15 and a half hours with 2. 5 hours screen on time, with a 20 minute charge midway through the day. I am just wondering why I can see other people getting 20 hours with 3 screen on time and stuff when I get less on both sides. Thanks!

You may have to post screen shots of Settings-->Battery so we can see what is using your battery.

While in my phone sits in my locker today on airplane mode screen on time 5min and 34secs I have lost 11% battery life. By the end of my work day it looks like its gonna end around 22-25% gone. My htc one on airplane mode can sit in my locker for 8hrs and only lose 2%. Their seems to be an issue with my phone. the screen on time is for checking the battery info to see that something is holding my phone awake for no reason. Looks like google services?

I don't get good battery life on my Verizon moto x. My screen time is not good. Mines been off charger just over an hour and a half and already down to 78%

Is there anything running in the background that shouldn't be? Are you using LTE while using the device? There are a lot of factors and real-world results will vary.

Did you check and see what accounts under Google are being synced? I currently only have Gmail and app data on sync and my battery has improved since.

Turning off location reporting in Maps helps out too.

It may be one or a few rougue apps that refresh in the background. I use Pulse and it has an option to turn this off.

For me, slacker radio was keeping my phone awake and killing the battery. If your battery life is not optimal, something like wake lock detector is really useful for troubleshooting.

Use wake lock detector my wake locks are minimal.

Can you clarify this any? Your partial wake locks are what counts. You don't have to have one app going nuts to cause sleep issues. You could have 4 or 5 apps doing slightly wonky things to set off 20 or 30 minutes each hour of the device being awake. Your google stuff, for example, often only updates when it see's that the phone is awake. A partial wake lock can set off a nasty chain reaction.

Here are some quick tips I've found useful.
1) Turn off any type of Haptic Feedback and touch sounds. It'll give Android fits.
2) Set any widgets to manually update and set any widgets/apps that are set to update at a set time to either only update once or twice a day, or just a manual update. Nothing will keep a device awake like a bunch of widgets that auto update.
3) Backup the contents of your SDcard and wipe, and copy everything back over, or scan your SDcard for .nomedia files and delete those.

Everything is a trade off. Location sharing will cause partial wake locks. When location sharing wakes a device up, everything else that will update when the device is awake is going to update and do it's thing. Gmail widgets and sync being on will cause partial wake locks. The best way to find out what the main culprit is, is to at least try the first and second of my suggestions, turn off location sharing, bluetooth and gps as well as sync including removing widgets. Leave your phone alone for a while and see if it sleeps. From there you can determine if it's a rogue app, or if the device is normal.

Absolute worst case scenario, you have to do a factory reset.

This all by itself was the reason that I stopped reading your post. If you really believe this then you should never offer any tips of any kind to android users ever again.
