Moto X vs Samsung Facinate

When is it coming to Verizon? This waiting game has gotten ridiculous.

Unfortunately not until the middle of September. With the recent news regarding the Droid Pro, the sales of the Fascinate will lag. Why wouldn't you wait two more months for the Pro?

Why would you wait ?

We know very little about the Pro, except some specs. What kind of battery life would a 1.3 Ghz phone have? We don't know. HOw hot will it get? We don't know. What kind of form factor will it have (hard buttons, capacitive ones) ? We don't know.

All of these answers will come, and maybe the Pro will be better. Maybe some folks don't want a Moto phone with Blur on it.

Lots of reasons to not wait IMO ..

If I remember correctly, the Pro has a keyboard, and will probably be locked down tighter than the X was. The Galaxy S phones have a gorgeous screen and are already rooted. And I won't have to drag around a keyboard I won't use. And to be honest, the .3 faster processor isn't enough to get me excited.

So, for some of us the Fascinate is the perfect phone. If it ever gets here.

Every one is entitled to their opinion but most everyone is impressed with the super amoled even with the "over saturation". Thanks for sharing though.

Even if you ignore that super amoled is a better screen technology, I think the GS is still the superior device.

You have a superior GPU which gives you better video quality and a higher fps output. Also web viewing on the GS is superior in my opinion.

Whatever Samsung used for touch screen tech is better then the droid x's. Pinch to zoom and other touch gestures are very smooth on the GS line of phones, while the moto blur struggles.

Label me a Moto hater if you'd like. I've had the OG droid, the incredible, back to og droid(rental), and now have the droid 2(rental).

After playing with all of these devices hands on, I still think the Galaxy S line of phones are far superior to anything moto has on the market.

If I can easily see the pixels, I'm turned off, so for me the Samsung could never top the Droid line for text or web viewing. I guess I can forgive the over saturation somewhat but seeing orange colored flesh tones or bright green grass in pics will get old really quick.

The FPS is higher on the Galaxy S but the X is smooth enough for most games - it got >40fps in the graphics benchmark. That's more than enough for enjoyable gameplay. Of course the Samsung is better but the difference definitely isn't night and day.

As for touch screen smoothness. Stick Launcher Pro or ADW on any high end Android phone and they're both smoother than Touchwiz, Blur or Sense so that argument is pretty moot. Also Touchwiz seems to be a memory hog and is definitely more laggy than even Blur when switching screens. Notice I said laggy, not jittery. If I had the Fascinate the first I'd do is replace the Touchwiz home screen.

The Camera's pics and video were good on the Captivate but the colors were drab. The X was superior there IMO.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not here to just bash Samsung but as an X user who thoroughly tested one out, I'm going to be brutally honest with my opinion. They're great phones, but except for gaming, they're not really superior at much else (compared to the X) as many seem to think. Again just my 2 cents.

I think it will depend on how much we know about the Pro when the Fascinate is finally released. If it's not releasing until mid-September, we could know more about the Pro than we know now. And that may be enough that may cause more of us to wait. That's pretty much where I'm at. I like the Fascinate, but tend to like physical keyboards. So, if we find out for sure (as sure as one can be prior to release) that the Pro will have a physical keyboard on top of the other specs we already know, that would be enough for me to wait.

There is also a possibilty that the Fascinate could go the way of the Nexus one on Verizon. The fact that there is no discussion or information from Verizon on this phone, when there is plenty of information concerning long term roadmaps that don't mention the Fascinate, may mean that it no longer fits into Verizons plans. we are already getting information from Verizon about a phone (the Pro), that wasn't a gleem in the eye when the Fascinate was announced yet the indications are that it has a place in Verizon's plans. However there is no solid information about where and if the Fascinate it still in Verizon's short or long term plans. I am skeptical that it will be released.

As recently as August 11, the Fascinate was listed on Verizon's "Advanced Device List," along with a bunch of other unreleased devices. Presumably they weren't supposed to be public yet, because they're gone from the current version of the page.

Advanced Device List*

Given Verizon's official silence, I find that somewhat reassuring.

Of course, a pessimistic interpretation would be that the phone was removed *because* it's no longer in Verizon's plans. But I have a really hard time believing that, particularly since Samsung continues to hype the Fascinate. It's coming ... just not soon enough.

Fair enough. Like I said we all have our opinions.

I've tested both devices as well and feel the Samsung Galaxy S line of phones are best for me.

Who knows with all the new devices about to be released, the Galaxy S may lose its top spot as best Android phone. It's only a matter of time.

And just like that .. It IS listed there again :)

Edit: I suppose I missed that you were linking a cached version of the page, my bad. I guess it's not there now .. Never mind .. :p

The Stock ROM on the X is probably good enough for my uses. But I got away from Windows Mobile into Android precisely so that after paying hundreds of $$ for the Droid and paying Verizon even more $$ to use the phone, I want to be the super user on my own phone. If I wanted what Bill Gates or Steve Jobs think I should have on a phone, I'd have stayed with Windows or tried an iPhone.

Hmm. My experience with Windows Mobile was just the oposite of what you seem to be saying. Windows Mobile 6.5 cooked ROMs out there in any flavor you want. SPB Mobile shell and skins out the Wazoo. Great App stores like Handango. I was in VZW store the other day talking about Droid X with rep. (He has one). I showed him my Modded WinMO and what it could do. He was blown away. Said "Man, I never knew a WinMo phone could do that!" If you want to customize, WinMO 6.5 offers tremendous possibilities. Sadly, limited by no new hardware for it. TBS, looks like 6.5 is end of the line. WinMo 7, if it ever comes out, will be an entirely new and unknown territory. Which is why I will be coming over to the Dark Side.

A couple of questions

I am ready for an upgrade. Have been looking at the X and am impressed. Have been doing some reading about the Fascinate now that we seem to know when it is coming. Got a couple of questions

1. 2 gig of memory on the Fascinate vs 8 gig on X--is this a major issue? I currently have a Blackberry that has basically no memory

2. Getting Froyo 2.2--I think I saw in some places that it might take longer to get on the Galaxy phones because of modified Android OS by Samsung?-- Is this correct?

3. Ability to use Google maps, navigation on the phone--from other posts, we should be able to not have to use Bing.

Thanks

as far as I know its not a world phone, don't believe any of the galaxy s line's are

Coming from a Droid 1, is there anything the X can do over the Fascinate or vice versa? I am due for and upgrade and I have been holding off on the X waiting for the Fascinate. Not really sure if I will miss anything by going to the Samsung?

I like being rooted on the D1 for themes and customization but I think I could be happy with a stock phone that can be themed. I really want the Samsung to be all that!

1.People make a big deal of it, but it isn't a big deal. It comes with a 16 gb card, and the Galaxy S phones have all been rooted pretty quickly. Making this mostly a non-issue, as you can store apps on the sd card. Froyo will also do this if you don't want to root and can wait.

2. Yes it will take longer, but its already being worked on so it shouldn't take that long. Also, the X and D2 also have a custom OS from Moto.

3. It comes with Google Maps w/ Navi, so it should be fine. Even if it didn't, you could download it from the Market. Rooting it will also allow you to get rid if Bing entirely if you want.

The Epic and Fascinate are CDMA devices, therefore they cannot be world phones. Though the Epic is CDMA/Wimax, so it may be possible with that, but I have no knowledge on it. The Vibrant and Captivate are GSM, so its a matter of popping out the sim card and popping in a different one, and then making sure the phone supports the bands of that area.

I believe what that thread is saying, is that the phone has a variant almost everywhere. So it will have a lot of mod/community support (i.e. custom roms, rooting, etc).

You will be able to root the Fascinate and do what you want with it, same as the D1.

The VZW Blackberry Bold, Tour, Storm 1/2, and the 8830 are world phones. They have both a CDMA and GSM radio in them as well as a SIM card slot. I'm sure that VZW will eventually release an Android device that incorporates this as well.

The only drawback is that they cannot do 3G on GSM (they are limited to Edge speeds), but they are most definitely world phones.

Ugh, that reminds me, another thing I would have to give up if I ditched my BB for a Fascinate... The Droid Pro and Droid 2 "world version" are two CDMA/GSM phones expected on VZ in the coming months, if world use is important this may be a deciding factor. CDMA is present in almost all of the worldwide tourist hotspots though, so the use case for a world phone is limited to extensive international travelers.

I had a Storm, so I know...which is why I mentioned the Epic had CDMA and LTE. Verizon is already releasing an Android world phone in the Droid 2 World Edition. I think it is being released at the end of Sept or sometime October. Also, I thought I read Samsung was working on one, but I can't remember.
