Motorola Assist - Driving

Is there a way for the GPS to turn on automatically? Like a special car dock or something?

I use car home app. There are settings in there for GPS to activate when the program starts.

I also use an app called llama, similar to tasker, it recognizes when I leave my home and turns WiFi off and BT, GPS on. You have a few options to make it work!

I initially had problems with Assist reading text messages to me while driving because I was using Handcent SMS as my default text app. I had to set the stock sms app as the default text app, and also disable pop-up notifications from Handcent. After that everything works perfectly while driving.

Hi.....while driving and when the phone reads the incoming text message, does it also give you the option to reply to the text message all while being handsfree or do you have to physically touch the phone to reply?

What I remember (it's only been a couple of texts so far, and a couple of days ago) is that for a text it:

Announces who is sending the text
Reads the text
Asks you if you want to send a text (to that person).

I do know that if you answer "send a text" to that last question, it simply sends the automated "I'm driving will get back to you later" text. I don't remember that it gives you the option of dictating a different text message.

On the other hand (assuming my memory is correct), you could then follow up by doing an "OK Google Now Send Text to XXX" and dictate a new text at that point. So you can definitely send a reply text totally hands free whether or not it allows you to do it right from that original text or if you have to initiate a new one.

I've used the OK Google Now to send texts, and it works very well - assuming it can understand you and that the recipient is not ambiguous. I'm gradually working on my contacts to make them less ambiguous, or at least remember exactly how my contacts are listed. My wife, for instance, shares a first name with a few other contacts I have, so I have relisted her with her last name! She saw that and gave me grief, until I explained it to her 8-)

Mine shows the driving icon, says the listen part but then never reads the text. I am using BT.

IIRC, after dictating a custom text, you still have to click the send button, so it is not entirely "hands-free." And if you uncheck in Motorola Assist Driving option to send text, it will not ask you if you want to send that template that "...I'm Driving...". It will just announce the texter and the message after you say Listen

yeah this thing has yet to work for me. ive tried everything. id really like to see what its capable of if assist would only work.

Had an issue yesterday, my Motorola Assist wasn't operating while driving, didn't see the little road icon. My GPS is always on. So I turned off the GPS and turned it back on. After that the driving icon appeared and all was good again.
