Motorola Bootloader Unlock Program for Moto X Pure Edition/Moto X Style

That pretty much states anything goes wrong with the device you are on your own and no hardware condition is covered either as some at XDA have stated is okay. Seems definitive that the warranty is dead once unlocking.

No ambiguity there. You don't even need to unlock the bootloader to void your warranty, merely possessing the code voids it.

What I don't understand is why the hardware portion is not covered when you unlock your boot loader.

Because if you do something stupid like wipe out the partition that has your IMEI on it, it's not Motorola's responsibility to replace the device.

Maybe I'm lucky, but I've never had hardware failure other than an iPhone 3Gs. Typically, if you're going to have hardware issues it will be early in your ownership. Unlock after a few months and you'll be fine.
