I was jw if motorola makes decent phones. Just saw the leaked specs for the next moto x and was really impressed. I am big into rooting my phones and running aosp roms. Are they typically good for that stuff?

They're very close to stock software, rooting/romming you'll want to stay with the dev edition if offered. The hardware is usually pretty good, but camera software has needed some work last couple of years.

Motorola makes great phones. I love my 2014 Moto X. I don't root or ROM any of my phones, because I like the stock Android experience. If you want to do that though, I'd stick with the Pure Edition.

On my 5th Motorola smartphone right now with the 2014 X. Not all have been good but the 2013 and 2014 X are very good phones. Camera is nothing special if you are a shutter bug but for occasional photos, it's fine. Heavy users will dislike the battery life (2014 X) but again, if you take advantage of the Moto Screen and not on your phone constantly, the battery will last all day easily. OS updates have been quick since the OG X and the phone is fluid in it's responses. The 2 X's are proof you don't need high end specs to have a speedy phone.

They're darned good. I've had a ton of Moto phones (loved those Razrs back in the day) and the Moto X is my fave. For me, battery life is great, Lollipop has been problem free (lucky me), and Moto Display - just love it. Motorola strikes just the right balance with stock Android and their own software. The only complaint I have is the camera. It's the waterloo of an otherwise terrific brand. I have eternal hope Motorola will improve in the camera department, but at the moment it's the one area where other brands have them beat.

Motorola makes the best phones in my opinion. I love stock Android. The fast updates on Verizon were great. I was a proud owner of the 2013 and 2014 x. Except the damn camera. So I have a note 4. It's night and day difference when snapping pics of my toddler. Until moto gets a camera comparable to samsung I'm not sure I can go back.

I owned both Moto Xs and I went through 3-4 devices for both devices. Also screen and camera are terrible compare to competitors.

I think they make excellent phones. Camera has not been the greatest, but it's the best overall experience in my opinion.

The build quality is very good, I have had my naked leather backed one since they were launched and it still looks like it did when I unboxed it.
I was initially disappointed when I first opened the box, it didn't have the Wow factor when I unboxed my Nexus 4, the lead and charger felt cheap and it was just sitting there unwrapped.
After that I have been very impressed though.

My moto x 2014 is my first Motorola phone, indeed my first android phone. Overall I am very impressed with it. The only thing that lets it down is the awful camera. Otherwise I would have no hesitation recommending the moto x

Has anybody heard if they are improving the camera on the 2015 moto x?

It supposedly has OIS so that should help out a bit.

My only complaint about the Moto X's camera is its infuriating inability to focus and overall cool/off looking colors. If Moto gave us some manual controls like manual focus it would make my life simpler...

Even my $50 Lumia 635 can take pictures with better focus and much more natural colors... Not to mention the fact that it has complete manual controls available to the user presented in a very intuitive user interface (Lumia Camera)...

I love my Moto X 2014. Its a great device! If I did it over I'd still buy my Moto X.

They look as awesome as you want them too! However stay away from the wood. They peel up. But they looked great. I miss mine to be honest. I"m even thinking about getting the new 2015 Moto X if its a nice upgrade.

I have the 32gig PE Moto X. If you need a phone you simply can not go wrong with it as a current choice. I will be getting my hands on a Zenfone 2 here I hope soon. I will compare the 2 for fun. Either way the Moto X's software a lone will keep it as my daily driver.

I've owned a 2013 Moto X and the 2014. Build is good. Antennas & radios are excellent. Screen is OK. Camera.... ugh. So-so at best, downright horrible at worst. It's possible to get good pics out of the cameras, but lighting has to be nearly ideal. Weird lighting typically equals a lot of time spent cleaning the image up. And graininess! Low-light & indoor shots are the worst for this. I can see grain in my pics without even zooming in on the photo.

Overall, I've been happy with my Motorola phones, but less so with the 2014 Moto X (software issues). I will say this: when it comes to signal strength & call quality -- they are hard to beat. That's one thing I'll miss when I go to another phone manufacturer.

Camera is the big "achilles heal" of the Moto X, but everything else is outstanding. I have the 2013, and plan on getting the 2014 sometime soon (even though it'll be replaced in a few months), mostly because Motorola keeps discounting it heavily, and will continue to do so as the summer goes on. Also, something I haven't seen mentioned, the price is highly competitive compared to the other flagships (Galaxy S6, LG G4, etc). The software on the Moto X is so great. Moto Display is so great, seeing Notifications without turning on the phone is nice. I can't imagine not having that.
