MOTO's official Bionic page is down...?

That was my point. There have been no marketing dollars spent on this device other than a page on Moto's site which cost them what? A few dollars to pay a guy to throw them up there? CES is a cost of doing business. I don't think they went to CES knowing what kind of issues they would face. This is new technology. First generation LTE handsets will have issues. As things progress they will get better at manufacturing them. I will even go so far to say that it with take until mid 2012 to get some really good LTE handsets out.

I hear ya, but my main point was that even though there hasn't been a lot of marketing dollars spent, there's still been an enormous amount of money spent on the development and manufacturing of the device. I realize that cancellations happen. But, the [rumored] cancellation of the Bionic would be an huge loss for both Motorola and Verizon, and I'd say moreso than other typical devices since it is new technology (since it's Motorola's first, it's their initial "startup" cost that's invested in it -- and lost -- unlike making another device where they're just repackaging existing technology).

Agree Dolfan it has and will cost them a lot of money. You make some very good points by the way. I enjoy having good conversations like this : ) so thanks for the great banter.

You too. Definitely nice to have good intellectual conversations, with points on both sides.

Funny too that it seems we're in the same boat. I've been eligible for an upgrade since Aug. 2010 as well. But, I still have my BlackBerry (didn't you have a Storm or Tour before too?) Don't have a Droid yet. The Bionic was going to be (or will be) my first.

Yeah I went from Curve to Tour to Droid ...

Uggh the Blackberry days :)

You also have to think about expenses going forward. It may end up being cancelled regardless of how much money has gone into it. The leadership may decide to keep pushing or drop it depending on just how much the cost equates to. Working for a company rolling onto SAP, I understand now why companies do this. If they can't progress beyond a certain phase of execution, it begins to cost money outside of a preset budget. Once it gets to a certain point, a company will re-evaluate its standing. I'm thinking Moto is at one of those points. My guess is that Moto hasn't said anything because they are trying to decide whether or not to drop the project. It isn't up to VZW because Moto can just fill the spot with another phone. My question is if the Bionic is having issues, what makes us think the replacement would be any better off. The targa sounds like it could be a faster stronger Bionic. (I am sure I misspelled that, targa) as it stands if they cant get a solid phone now, what would crammimg stronger hardware into the phone do? Either way, unless someone from Moto states it's live or dead, we will never truly know. Doesn't matter if it's bmx or anyone else. I want to hear from Moto's heads of offices or the project manager himself.

Too bad Motorola couldn't have released a few of them in the wild like they did with the old Q9 Napoleon. ;)

The Droid Bionic is currently going through testing phases. The Bionic is definitely coming to the market place,no doubt...

so its not canceled

billion dollar plans get laid to rest! it doesnt matter how much money they have in it, if it doent make sense to move forward with something it doesnt make sense. its not a complete loss, knowledge is very expensive and im sure they gained some on the R&D of this device. this knowledge good or bad will be carried forward and amortized in dozens of future phones. you guys are thinking with your pocket books!

Not for Motorola they don't. They don't have the cash to absorb the cancellation of a high profile product, especially if it was canceled for the reasons that are being rumored. (Tegra 2 not playing nice with the LTE/CDMA/EVDO chipset) If those rumors are true, the entire development cycle would be a total loss, because it means that Tegra 2 could never be used for an LTE device on Verizon. Motorola would lose more by canceling it than they would by delaying it.

Motorola Twitter

HTC Twitter

Go ahead and make that move to the tbolt

If they did drop the bionic, just go ahead and make that move to the tbolt for that unlimited data. I think it might actually be better than any other phone left on Verizon after the bionic. It is a really nice phone. Plus sense is killing blur.

No I was not really impressed by the TB After messing around with a friend of mine for a couple of days.. I want a phone that is the Future and Dual Core 4G is the future. So I will use the BB Storm as Long as I can. The DX I gave my wife I will use that also or Buy A old DX from Ebay until Dual Core is released. Also The Is Alway Launcher Pro Plus.. If The TB was the EVO 3D Then I would consider it but crappy battery life no I will pass on anything HTC until they solve there Battery Issues.

^I agree Preach. At this point it would be very difficult to settle for a T-Bolt after waiting so long for the Bionic. Its a far more powerful device, and I hate buying outdated hardware when I know that much better hardware is already available, or at least should be. Also, I plan to use my next phone alot, as a GPS, browsing my script heavy employee portal while on the job, checking email, streaming music when in the car, playing music while walking to class, and of course various apps/games/web throughout the day. Oh, and I tend to have to talk on it alot. I do marketing/merchandising contract work, driving from store to store, sometimes ones I've never been too before, and am also a full-time student. So you can see how much I would use my phone in a day, and how difficult it would be for me if it couldn't make it.

I've been hearing a few things suggesting Verizon said something to the effect that it wasn't cancelled, though this could easily indicate that the name is not dead but will not be the Etna, as mentioned previously. I'd like to believe that the Etna is coming soon, as I simply don't believe that Moto would be able to rush the Targa to market anytime in Q2, not with all the issues they've had with Etna. I definitely plan to lock myself into 4G unlimited though, so I guess I'll keep holding out until they announce the date that unlimited data is going away, and get the best of whatever LTE phones are out at the time, even if I do have to get a Thunderbolt and a second battery.

Any more solid information on an LTE Galaxy S2?

One thing i really liked about the Bionic is that it had S-GPS as opposed to A-GPS.

I havent seen another phone with S, so is there any other coming that have S?

what? you plan on using your phone the way it is marketed for us to use? why that is preposterous! with that type of thinking you simply have two options, factor in an additional $50 dollars and get ready to murder your phones styling or consider your wireless device a corded phone because it will always be plugged in! that is what is so irritating about these manufacturers and carriers. the phones are marketed directly as mobile computing devices to keep us in touch, help us get to where we are going, listen to music, upload our lives to the web, billions of apps etc. but they refuse to build in sufficient battery power and sell it as an option!! it is not an option! i need a device to last all day, so does everyone else.

Simmer down. It's one thing to complain about company policies, but you are arguing about the forces of nature. Right now battery tech and processor/display efficiency aren't able to give you all that and a nice compact shape.

They do offer a Tbolt option with all day battery. It just looks so completely fugly that few people are interested in it.

no sir. you are missing my point. two things here.

market it as such, truth in advertising! at least make mention of it in your marketing materials that because of the awsome capabilities of the new phones you might experience reduced battery times compared to traditional phones and blackberry devices.

plan for the extended battery as a forthought. instead of it being a ridiculous lump in the middle that sticks out .5 to .65 inches, put it in there to begin with, distribute its massive depth across the entire rear of the phone, much larger footprint, much shallower depth. if these phones had to be .15-.25 inch thicker to fit a 3700MAh battery in it, so be it. wouldnt you rather have a little thicker device than a ridiculous bulg? take a poll on that, i think the answer is evident. it doesnt have to be razr thin. it is what it is! if it has to be that thick to get x amount of hours, it has to be that thick. as battery tech develops these devices can get thinner. but to gain the illusion of thinness to sell a product and then realize you have to add a tumor to its rear is ridiculous. look at the first brick cell phones, they were what they were. they were that big for a reason. as technology improved they shrunk, but for the most part, it wasnt at the sacrifice of usability.

there, is an option 3 now that i think about it. keep mindlessly wasting your money on the crap they put out and prove to them that you dont give a **** about the battery performance of their phones. it will be a vicous cycle and we will always be dissatisfied.

I think that was the point he was trying to make. The phone is marketed as a do-everything device, and obviously its expected to last all day. If I have to think carefully about how much I use it or how I use it in order to last me until the next time I get to hang around a power outlet for a few hours, that isn't mobile. And honestly, it may as well not have the capabilities that it does, since I can't use them freely anyway because of my schedule. I shouldn't have to spend extra money and ruin the aesthetics of my phone to get all-day performance out of it.

I am aware that many people have found significantly increased battery life with custom ROM's and kernels, using a good task killer, being careful which applications update when, and buying a slim 1600mah or so battery. Still, I don't want to have to hack a phone just to get acceptable battery life. Not that I wouldn't want to hack it, I just don't like the idea that its something you almost have to do. However, that gives me hope that HTC's Gingerbread update will have a number of these optimizations built-in to vastly improve the battery life, and hopefully a fix for the supposed LTE-handoff issues as well. If so, this device would look a lot more attractive to me. But even if it comes out by June as HTC is claiming, hopefully there will be more powerful options by then. I don't really want to be stuck with a single core A8/205 device without any other truly outstanding features other than LTE.

Again though, I care even more about the plan than the phone, and if Verizon announces the end of unlimited 4g before something else is out, I will just grab the T-bolt. I honestly don't see them doing that soon, however, as the sales spike for HTC and subsequent slump in sales for devices after tiered takes over would really piss the other manufacturing partners off. I HIGHLY doubt it will end until we see at least one LTE device from all 4 manufacturers, which I assume would mean the Targa if the Etna is in fact dead. I'm still SO ready to dump this LG Versa though, I got it just a month before Android phones were announced on Verizon, and have been eligible to early upgrade since last summer... The end of waiting my ass.

Who knows though, we may yet be surprised.
