Is it possible to change the placing and orientation (horizontal/vertical) of the favorites tray on my home screen.

I do not want a launcher and I do not want to root my device.

You said you do not want a different launcher. That is an app and yes, there probably are launchers that will do what you want.

Because I like the stock one, I've tried other ones but weren't fond of any at all

Use Nova. As close to stock as your gonna get (and, without much customization it pretty much is stock). Now as to whether it can do what you want it to do I'm not quite sure. It might if you pay for the premium features but I haven't so I can't advise on that.
