Move the back button

There is one funky option you might want to try just for the fun of it --

Settings -> System -> Developer options -> Force RTL layout direction.

Basically, it flips the entire screen so that everything that is normally on the right is now on the left and vice versa.

PS: In my experience, right-handers generally hold a phone in their left hand. This is probably a learned behavior that involves keeping the dominant hand free for taking notes or whatever while engaged in a phone conversation.

Not also that right-handers most often wear their wristwatch on the left arm, for similar reasons.

I would love if you could just turn it off. It's not even needed. I know where to push to "go back" :)

Reading is left to right, when you go "back", logically you are going back left therefore the back button should be on the left. Going forward is to the right, as in when you turn a page in a book. On my S8 I keep the back button always on the left. Works perfectly for my brain 😀

This is keeping me from getting a Pixel 3. I have small hands and my thumb just can't comfortably reach down to the left-side back button without feeling like I'm going to drop the phone.

Yes, still an issue on the smaller Pixel 3. It's like trying to hit my multitask button on my Galaxy S8. It's uncomfortable and makes the phone unstable in my hand.

You can always get one of these

If you rooted your phone you could probably find a modification that provides that functionality.
It was on the right side I obtained the phone a month ago. It changed 2 days ago when I switched back to Samsung keyboard.
I transferred my info from my Blackberry, which has a side panel slideout. I suspect the settings for that panel transferred over. When I switched keyboard back it reset the setting of the keyboard back to the left side.

Not an ideal solution, but you can flip the entire display left-to-right in Developer Option - "Force RTL layout direction"

Everything that was on the left will be on the right and vice-versa.

Absolutely you can, even without root! Custom navigation bar from play store. Without root you must grant permission through adb, which it explains how to do it on apps 1st boot. Enjoy

Interesting application, although I don't usually install anything that has less than a 4.0 rating. Lots of recent reviews indicate that it has problems on Pie where the Nav bar will turn white, along with the buttons, so you can't see anything.
Have you had any experience with that?

Thank you for showing me this - works great and I've also just payed for the non ad version!

I am forcing myself NOT to install this. I got so used to Samsung's right side back button that when I switched to a LG phone, I have to change the back button from the default left side to the right side. When I got the Pixel 3 XL, the first thing I looked for was the button side swap and can't find it. I have decided that I need to be flexible and it is like training my other side brain like brushing your teeth with the other hand from time to time LOL.
