Moved from Fi to AT&T... OS updates?

Hi, all-

I bought my Nexus 5x from Google, and tried Fi for 2 months before deciding its coverage wasn't working for me. I popped in an AT&T SIM and am now up and running smoothly with them.

My only question is... How do I now get updates? Since the Nexus 5x is not a phone AT&T offers, I assume they don't provide OTA updates of any kind for it, am I right? I loved getting the monthly security updates when I was on Fi, and did manage to upgrade to Nougat before leaving... but I'm concerned about how to stay current going forward.

Any idea? Thanks in advance for any light you can shed!

You should still get OTA updates. I'm on AT&T and was getting OTA updates before I flashed custom recovery.

Glad to hear that! So when I check for updates, you're saying it's still pinging Google directly, not whichever provider's sim is installed. Is that correct?

I'm also wondering what will happen in my specific case, because I did an odd thing... When still on Fi, I switched to the beta channel in order to receive the Nougat update more quickly. I never switched back to the official channel before switching. Does this mean I'll likely be getting all the incremental updates of the beta version, or did that stop when I left Fi?

Yeah, the updates will be through Google without AT&T delaying the update or adding bloatware (happened to my non-AT&T N6). Not sure about the beta updates. I've been on custom ROMs for a while.

@SactoKingsFan, thanks for sharing your experience. Makes me feel a lot better... where the updates would come from never occurred to me until after I switched!

Since you mentioned it, what's your favorite custom ROM for this phone?

No problem.

My favorite ROM for the 5x is PureNexus. Near stock UI, stable, good battery life, frequent updates and useful extra features. Works well with substratum theme engine and ElementalX kernel.

Sounds good, can you put a flashlight and a brightness slider in the top pull-down menu (without having to pull down twice like you do in stock)? Even better, I remember CyanogenMod let you do brightness just by dragging across the top bar, no pull-down needed. I've been missing that since I got this phone!

In PN you can open the quick settings with flashlight and brightness slider just by pulling down on right edge of status bar. I keep the Brightness slider hidden and use the status bar to adjust brightness. Also have lockscreen and power button shortcuts for flashlight.
