Out of the box it can play MP4's. You can also use RockPlayer (available in the Market) if you want to play AVI files.

I bought and use the Act 1 Video Player from Market. It works GREAT!! Clear pix, great sound. You can choose format - I use the MP4.

is the VLC player a super app as it is for our computers? cuz the X wont play mkv files as i sadly discovered last nite

I use the droid x catalyst dvd converter. It works very well.

DVDFab is what I use and works great for me. I just used the DVD to iPhone format and change the quality and it looks great. DVDFab is a great program, cost a pretty penny but does it's job well and doesn't bog up your computer.

On the other hand, Handbrake is another great program and free.

But .mp4 seems to work the best for me.

No player supports the HDMI out but the stock Gallery app but you can use RealHDMI to play all information on device on screen, it isnt perfect but it works..

As for format I use MP4 with Meridian Player and it works perfectly and quality is perfect when filtered with HDMI video conversion option.

MP4/MPEG format is better due to the compression. AVI produces huge video files, which take up more space on your SD card.

I use mp4 as my default for all videos... andif its not in mp4 format then i'll use vlc player on ny laptop to convert it and then copy/paste it to my sd card... no issues or choppiness so far.

My Droid 2 played avi files out of the box. I didn't get to try it on my X because I prefer the video player in ES file explorer.
