Mugen 4000 Mah Battery

I am going to chime in here. I am picking between the Rezound and the RAZR MAXX. The Extended battery for $30 is a great accessory.

I'm trying to drain the Mugen battery on it's third round. One more overcharge and then it will be primed. It's taking a while since the battery does seem to last quite a bit.

Also, I had to take out the Mugen battery and put the OEM extended battery in the phone since I needed to use the Navigation app today and the phone will not fit into the car adaptor with the Mugen Power 4000 mAh battery in. Interstingly, the Battery Wiget app reported that my OEM extended battery was at 49 degrees C, a dangerously hot temperature, after using the GPS navigation for 45 minutes. And I was in an air conditioned car and was not charging the phone, yet it still got hot. I had to leave the phone in the car afterwards while I helped somebody move stuff. The phone or battery must have run too hot because the phone turned itself off while in the car. This is not the first time I've seen the OEM extended battery get hot using GPS.

Just finished my experiments and the Mugen Power battery did outperform the OEM extended battery. I'll put more details later.

The battle royale

To test the two batteries I did the following:

- Put on charger and made sure battery was fully charged. 99 or 100 percent, according to the Battery Circle widget (which reports percentages by units of 1).

- Set brightness at 50%. Turned media/headphone volume to max. 4G LTE was on. Wifi off, bluetooth off, no syncing. (I have no social networking apps running in background either.)

- Unplugged charger. Wrote down the starting time and battery percentage according to the widget.

- Loaded up the Netflix app. Started playing an episode of South Park. Plugged in my portable speaker to the headphone jack, so I could hear it and ensure it was playing the whole time. Made sure to watch episdes of the same season to ensure they were all of the same resolution and frame size on my screen.

- Repeat for a total of 4 episodes. 22 min each. Total of 88 minutes. No phone calls or texts interrupted me.

- At the end I went back to home screen and wrote down the finishing time and battery percentage.

The end result:

Each battery started at 99%. At the end of 88 minutes of video streaming, the Mugen Power 4000 mAh battery still had 73% power remaining, and the OEM extended 2750 mAH battery had only 60% power remaining.

Streaming videos via the LTE network is one of the most power-demanding processes you can do on a smart phone. So, this was a fairly impressive result for the Mugen Power battery. This is also consistent with my subjective experience using Mugen Power battery over the course of a week. I've also noticed that the Mugen Power battery consistently runs about 3 degrees C cooler than the OEM extended battery for each activity.

Now it remains to be seen if the battery can hold its recharge capacity in the upcoming months. Some people have reported (anecdotal) that 3rd party batteries tend to lose their capacity quicker than OEM batteries.

Wow. I'm impressed.

Now do I want to engage hulk mode on my phone for the extra battery life? Possibly... It'd give me reason to play netflix when I'm away from a wall outlet lol

I'm with you bro. I can't even count how many times I've been on frustrated on the porcelain throne by seeing my battery alert screen come up. I'm tired of it.
Based on the pics Deron posted, the phone actually looks pretty badass. And that kickstand? Sweet jesus.

Edit: I just saw the price. $100? Too rich for my blood.

Honestly, the price that Mugen charges (even with the 8% off code) is not justified when compared to the performance. Their battery is more than twice the price of the OEM extended battery, yet only offers a 15 to 20% longer battery performance.

And don't get too excited about the kickstand. It's too flimsy to recommend using on a regular basis. Interstingly enough, I complained about the kickstand on the Mugen Power Facebook page and they said their engineers have improved the back and that I can apply to get a free replacement. I wonder if this will also fix the speaker issue?

Also, there are no cases that are designed for it at this this time. The TPU case you see in my pictures barely fits and is distorted at the sides.

Ah. I appreciate the detailed feedback. I'm sure I wasn't the only one on here contemplating getting this, but it looks like I'll stay away. Oh well, dreams are crushed every day.

Update. Mugen Power is sending me a replacement back free of charge. Let's see if they've improved the kickstand.

I turned off the mobile data during parts of the day that I would not need it. Was able to go almost 2 full days on one charge.

the price is reasonable for this accessory. it is a quality product, it is well done with very improving performance and well thought through backdoor to compensate its thickness with kickstand and comfortable texture. I just wish the phone manufacturers payed as much attention to their stock batteries as mugen does.

Hah, nice try Mugen CEO.

Your company (I am assuming you are a Mugen Power representative) claimed on their Facebook page that they improved the battery back and sent me a free replacement back. However, the new back I received is exactly the same as my original. I appreciate the free second back, but it's the same thing with the same plastic kickstand. The kickstand is only mediocre. It hasn't broke or loosened yet, but I imagine it won't take long for either of those to happen.

The battery seemsto to be holding a charge well, although it drains in an inconsistent manner sometimes. Sometimes it will go from 100 % down to 85 % within 10 minutes, but then remain at 85% for another half hour. So the overall battery life seems good.

I would estimate this mugen 4000 mAh battery gets about 10 to 15 percent longer life per charge than the OEM extended battery. However, I am not so certain it is worth more than twice the price of the OEM extended battery.

Yes, you can too can have a Rezound that looks like my old Motorola flip phone from 1992. Yuk!

For that much money, you can buy 5 more stock slim batteries ($20 each, from VZW) and have (6 x 1620 = 9720) more than twice the capacity - and no brick in your pocket. I have 2 extra stock batteries to carry with me, just in case. But, I've only had my Rezound for 9 days now and I have yet to run out of battery before bedtime, just using 1 battery. Not saying a heavy use day won't burn through one and maybe even two stock batteries. Just saying I haven't yet. And for the occasions when I do, I'd rather just be carrying an extra slim battery or 2 somewhere (pocket, backpack, car, wherever) and swap it out than put up with a grossly thick phone all the time.

I am running ICS 4.0.3 (Nils' Business Sense ICS ROM v4.1), if that makes a difference on battery life.

IMO, the phone feels a lot better to hold with either extended battery verses the original OEM battery. So it's the best of both worlds for me: improved comfort and improved battery life.
