Multitasking fix

This is the main reason why I exchanged my EVO for an s3. It was a fdifficult decision as I had all EVOs from launch. But frankly I would not stand for this and spend my money on a dubbed down device when there's better out. I loved the EVO but the lack of multitasking just didn't for me. What pains me is they're not doing nothing about it and just say it works as designed. HTC if you hadn't f the phone up you wouldn't be having financial loss and low sales to your competitors

How do you like the new S3? I am thinking about exchanging mine for an S3 tonight... as its my last day. Do you like it better? Its a shame because I really liked sense... I was a epic 4G owner and that left a sour taste in my mouth.

Few companies listen to consumers unless the company begins to lose money due to taking a deaf ear to customers'' issues.

Although this is true, we have to communicate our issues to HTC or they won't know that it could be part of the reason sales are not what they could be. A lot of people listen to us "geeks" when asking about what phones are great/good/average/poor/horrible.

Exactly.

At a minimum, every single person on these forums needs to spend the two minutes or so it will take to go to HTC Smartphones and Tablets - Support for HTC Cell Phones and Tablets and tell HTC why you are unhappy with this "design". Eventually they will come to understand that the way they are handling memory management/task killing/multitasking is just not acceptable. The more people that complain, the better the chance it will get fixed.

Contacted them. Here's what I said.

"I have recently purchased the Sprint EVO 4g LTE and while I am quite impressed by the device, the lack of genuine mulch-tasking has become more apparent as an issue. If the phone had a lack of available RAM, I would understand. Judging by the pre-installed task manager, there is not a lack of available RAM. I do not understand the design choice in making an app be temporarily disabled when there is 250mb+ of available RAM. Perhaps if that number was significantly lower would I agree with the design choice. I would simply like to bring to your attention that I, along with many other vocal customers, feel that an update is necessary to address this issue. If the sense overlay is simply too bloated for 1gb of RAM, then I feel that HTC should, as a company, stand by your proclamation of a "stripped down and less bloaty" version of sense and issue an update addressing the underlying issues. In other words, include the fixes in an update to sense 4.5 featuring the newest version of the android operating system available, Jelly Bean.

Thank you for your time."

HTC's bankruptcy and the total domination of Samsung in Android land.
Start counting.
I'll miss Android when that day comes.

I talked to HTC on the phone today, and the guy told me the multitasking is also designed to kill off apps o free up memory and save battery.

Its like HTC does not even care! Oh well, it was good while it lasted. Long live the og Evo.!

Putting my evo up for sale and going to AT&T for the gs3. I don't care for the screen but the phone works great and has nice options, plus multitasking works great.

Before it's too late? For me, that already happened. This will be my last HTC Software phone (if they make another Nexus I'll buy it but thats because it's google's software). I am done with HTC and their phones. The quality of phones went down after the OG Evo (still the best phone I've ever owned). They take away the SD Card Slot, they take away the removable battery, they put on too much bloat on their phones, mess us multitasking, dont release source until 3 months after the release (Sammy releases source BEFORE the phones launch for comparison). They are just terrible now.

On top of all of this Samsung stepped up their game the past 2 years. The SGS2 blew away anything HTC had in every way possible (faster processor, better camera, faster updates). Then this year they come out and release the phone in a timely manner on 5 US CARRIERS, keep the same design, and a;ready got an pdate out for their phones.

Sorry but HTC has lost it, Sammy >>>>>> HTC. They truly let me down both this year and last. This multitasking fiasco is the final nail on the coffin for me, because I know they wont fix it (at least to my liking anyway). I'll keep this phone for a year and put a CM9/CM10 Rom on it and be a little happy :)

We have an SD card slot on the EVO LTE, ICS has limited what you can do with it somewhat, but thats not HTC's fault.

Other than that, I have played with the Samsung III and, overall, I still prefer the EVO. And that is before any singal/radio issues (which did not apply to where I was playing with it) that I have always had with any Samsung phone on the Sprint network. The two things were Sammy beats the EVO right now is the Sense reloading issue (solved with NOVA launcher for me) and multitasking which IS a pain but should be fixed with an ASOP ROM when we get that.

Thats not to say I am happy with HTC. If they insisted on putting that huge Sense footprint on the LTE, it needed more RAM and what we have is NOT multitasking. I emailed them as suggested above, the response I got was the typical "it ain't broke' response.

At least you told them you are not happy, and that matters.

I just sent HTC a message also. I am so disappointed with this implementation of multitasking. There are so many great features that I just love about this phone, but this one glooming issue overshadows all of the greatness! I am really considering going Nexus, once Google releases it's official lineup. I will not get a Samsung phone ever again! They lost me with the Instinct! I played with the verizon GS3 today and the only thing it has over the E4GLTE is multitasking! UG! It kills me to even say it! I think Nexus is the way to go for me, easy to root, easy to ROM and you get all the updates first! I just wish they had some top of the line HW to go with it.

Well, I sent HTC a note about the issue at the above link. I didn't even get the "operating as intended" standard answer back. Here's the reply:

The problem is that the link goes to a place that seems more like a developer's contact type thing. Nothing in their "select type of problem" matches. But I am game.... I am sending my request there too:

I and MANY other people are very upset about how memory management/task management/multitasking does not work well on the Evo 4G LTE (and the HTC One X also). Most apps will not run in the background and simply get frozen and reloaded later. Sometimes I can't even keep ONE program running- I can turn off the screen, then turn it back on, and the app was suspended and reloaded; often resulting in losing my place on a secure website or the app forgetting where I was in a game. This is really not good at all. Never had these kinds of issues with the Evo 4G or the Evo 3D. This needs to be addressed/fixed ASAP- even if it just some obscure menu options that allow the user to control how things are managed. I didn't buy a high-end superphone only to be stuck with something that operates like the ancient PalmOS. Thanks

I got the standard your input is important but "it ain't broken" response so sent them this:

Thanks for your response, however, its not that MultiTasking is not working, its that the LTE does NOT HAVE multitasking. The suggestions you make only slightly adjust how "bad" the non-Multitasking is. You might want to check out the following:

Again, thanks for you time, I know you cannot admit that this stinks, but it does. I know it was a design decision, it was just a really, really bad one. But, since your Boss said you are not going to concentrate on the US market anymore, I have low expectations it will be fixed.

I got back a different version of the "nothing is wrong" message that said we are aware of the comments of some in the "enthusiast community" and have forwarded them on, however.....

Maybe if it's going straight to the developers and not getting filtered through layers of customer service, PR, and who knows whatever other layers of corporate bureaucracy, the message will get through.

@midmofan: the sad thing is that for every link you posted regarding the EVO, there's even more for the HOX.

Sent from my EVO using Android Central Forums

I got an official response today from my email to HTC...

Dear cloak.n.dagger,

Thank you for contacting HTC Technical Support, c.n.d I am sorry to hear you are experiencing issues while trying to multitask with your phone. I Understand you purchase a phone like the Evo LTE with the expectation to be able to do this flawlessly.

C.n.d I do have one thing that you could try to see this will resolve the issue that you are having though. First I would like you to make sure that you are running the most up to date version of Android by going into Settings > Software & Updates > Then hit check now. If it is all up to day than what I would like you to do is please go into Settings > Developer Options > Application settings > Then you will see "Don't Keep Activities" please make sure this is Disabled, also you will see "Background Process Limit" please make sure this is set to the "Standard Limit" After those settings are set to that (if they are not already set to that) it will hopefully resolve the issue that you are having. If this does not fix the issue than I do apologize and can suggest that you could call us at 1-866-449-8358 we are open 6am - 1am Everyday of the week. That number can also be found on our website at HTC - Mobile Phones, Smartphones, Cell Phones, Tablets.

C.n.d I hope this information that I have gave you helps and you are able to fix this issue, and would like to thank you for choosing HTC, you have a wonderful day!

At least he tried, but multitasking is still a no-go after the update. The settings that "Troy" referred to were already set to the options he suggested. So... Nexus it is for me. I will have to ride out this phone until I can either trade or upgrade, so I will have to be happy with rooting and ROMing to hold me over until then. As soon as an AOKP/AOSP or CM9 ROM is "fully functional" I will be flashing. Sense is the root of all problems on this phone and the sooner I can get rid of it, the better. It really is a sad day for me. :'( I thought I'd be HTC to the end, but they have killed the dream for me (although, not as bad as Sammy!). I need a drink....
