My Evo Camera/Video just got Schooled by Iphone4

I'm curious why there is a 25FPS limit on the EVO 720p video recording. That is a main culprit on how smooth it looks compared to a 30FPS video: even my Pre's videos looked smoother than my EVO's 720p video.

Also, the EVO is compressing the HELL out of the 720p, which really defeats the purpose of HD video. Might was well shoot with 800x480 and upscale it with a video editor. It would be nice that in an update, HTC allowed different levels of compression like it does with the JPEG stills.

Another thing: why is the EVO format 3GP? That seems like a step backwards (might explain the audio issue?)

Poor thread title I see..sounds as tho my purpose is to tout IPhone perse. Not so.
Having a good camera and video recorder IS important to me for various reasons and had heard that the IPhone quality was a cut above due to some different development technique or whatever... so i compared not believing that a 5mgpxl cam and samespec video recorder could infact be significantly better.
It was. Truth.
Have no interest in going back to that device tho.

I saw what you were trying to show, but I don't think you really need to as anyone should be able to see the Evo's 720p recording is extremely poor. Being a cell phone is not an excuse at this resolution because if it can't do it, why bother other than using it as a selling tool?

But, as I said earlier, hopefully some firmware tweaking can make it better. I don't record a lot of video, but I tried 720p the first couple days indoors and out and never tried it again. It's just a laggy, grainy, giant file for no reason. Lower resolutions aren't great either, but they are ok for the video and file sizes.

25 fps is the minimum for playing back on your standard HDTV. At the moment it doesn't look like a limit, more like something hardware or software is making that the maximum. HTC responds "Most feature films are recorded at 24.8 fps."

Yeah, they're also using film driven by a motor and don't have to worry about processing power being taken away slowing the thing down...

Well, Feature films are in huge screens where motion blur is differently perceived. Those movies are upscaled to 29.976FPS for DVD and TV soooo, there's that, HTC. lol.

But open a video shot on the iPhone 4 and you'll see each frame is doubled. This is why video shot on one mediocre camera looks better than video shot on another mediocre camera.

Apple spent more time and money on the software than HTC did. Then they made the ridiculously clunky way you create a new folder in iOS4. things even out.

I need to see still comparisons to believe this, yet nobody's producing them. The Evo takes fantastic quality photos, I can't see how another phone could "spank" it.

The reason no one is posting a comparison is because when someone picks up the iphone in an attempt to upload a photo, their hand touching the antenna actually shorts it and it loses it's signal.

Ya I majored in film school at the University of BS and with my naked eye I can see the EVO video totally blows away the Iphones video.

To be realy honest I have no interest in the Iphone nor do I care about the Iphone in any way,shape or form.

My girlfriend loves her Iphone will be getting the new one. good for her and good for all the people that camped out for two days to get the Iphone. I just don't give a rat's a** about the Iphone!!

I don't care if the Iphone can take pictures in space or underwater.I dont't care if James Cameron filmed Avatar with an Iphone.I just don't give a crap about the Iphone period!

I will not be a Fanboi, I will not be conformed and I will never own an Iphone!

If we( the people on the HTC forums) wanted to buy an Iphone we would have. If I wanted to have crappy overpriced service from AT&T, I would have gotten an Iphone.But I didn't , I am happy with Sprint and their service and they are constantly adding new and amazing phones to their stable. I love 4g, I love being able to upgrade to new phone once a year. I love free cell to cell phone calls. I like cheap bills that come in the mail. I love Ice cream and Unicorns but the one thing I don't love is the Iphone. Steve Jobs can take the Iphone and shove it, he will never get my hard earned dollars!

I really don't care! The iPhone 4 could have picture quality to rival a Canon 1Ds DSLR. I didn't buy my phone primarily to be a camera. As far as I'm concerned Android phones offer far more versatility than do iPhones.

If the camera is the most important feature of a phone for you, then I guess you'd better go stand in line at an Apple store. Or buy a real camera ro go with your EVO, and have both a better phone and a better camera than the iPhone.

But, from comparing the two videos, the biggest difference is that the 4G one is a bit overexposed, the iPhone one a bit underexposed, which makes the colors seem more saturated. I don't know if either phone has the ability to adjust exposure in video mode.

I was just running some comparisons on EVO vs. iPhone 4. The difference maker on the video is frames per second. If the evo hit 30 fps, then there would be nothing for the iPhone to hang on to. As it stands, though, I am perfectly happy with my EVO.

With the front facing camera, the iPhone loses handily to the EVO. You can see a huge difference.

All I am saying is if you bought your phone for the camera then you have your priorities messed up.

Just went to Apple store and spent 30 min comparing.
Pics and vids on iphone are without a doubt clearer and richer...
The camera and video are probably the main I got the Evo....as well as screen size.
(And we're talking phone to phone comparison...of course point and shoot devices are better).
IPhone 4 flat out spanks the Evo in this department.

I owned an iPhone for 2 years and I have never spent 30 minutes in an Apple store in my life. Why in the world if you JUST BOUGHT an EVO would you waste your time going to an Apple store and playing with an iPhone?

I knew well in advance that the Monday after the EVO the new iPhone was coming out and I still preordered the EVO and I am perfectly happy with it. As many others have posted if you want great video/picture quality go buy a dedicated camera for that.

I have made a few short video's with my EVO but nothing big or any thing that won't be an after thought two weeks from now.

I say go buy an iPhone and stop complaining here....
