My Evo Camera/Video just got Schooled by Iphone4

Listen,

I have an EVO and have contiplated on getting an Iphone only cause of looks at first. Then, my friend and I both took video and pictures with our phone (indoors) and i have to admit that BOTH pictures and Video came out BETTER on the IPHONE4. Now, i'm not a photographer/videogrpaher but the COLORS came out BRIGHTER and more Vibrant. Now, i also have an issue with the Grainy pics. I dont know if its a non-setady hand, lighting or what, but out-the-box, the the EVO is has a crapy camera for it to be 8 MEGAPIXELS.

Consumers want things to work as perfect as possible as the default. I dont want to have to change my ISO, lighting, or other settings for every picture unless i'm in a highly tense setting.

I think the over-all colors on the EVO kinda suck vs. the Iphone4 and even the Nexus One. Reds arent Red enough, just looks a little washed.

If picture quality is job 1, maybe you should buy a camera. For me, the hundreds of things the Evo does better than the iPhone are much more important.

Taking your "consumers want things to work" argument, I'd have to reject the iPhone 4 because minor things like the antenna just don't work.

See my sig:

The plain and simple of it is that the iPhone 4 has a larger, better camera sensor. That's what makes pictures/videos look better. Period. Megapixels mean d!ck when it comes to picture quality. They are mostly just a sales technique.

That said, I love my Evo and Android and wouldn't trade them for Apple. Ever.

I am really impressed with the apple then again APPLE is made in the USA and HTC is a taiwanese product-- and very young company.

Bzzzzt. Oh I am sorry but the correct answer is "Foxconn.” Apple products are made in the same factory as HTC products are made. We have some nice parting gifts for you however.

Seriously? You think Apple makes its products here in the USA and they are better for it? Apple uses cheap labor just like all companies. Apple does not care about anything but money, like all of them. If Apple were so great they would open a US factory and support the local economy. Then your precious iPhone would cost $1500 and no matter how much Apple heads say they are for the environment and helping others, they would not pay that.

Talk is cheap and easy. I get so sick of people acting like Apple is such a good company and has such high morals and standards. They don’t care about anything but the bottom line, that is why, even with cheap labor, their products cost so damn much.

Apple is an American company but it does NOT manufacture its products here, very few do these days. The Evo is made in the same Foxconn factory as the iPhone as far as I know. So no difference in quality depending on how much they put into it..

My, what a sophisticated analysis. And almost completely wrong. Yes, larger pixels mean less noise in the image; that's about all. Other aspects of sensor quality have little to do with pixel density. Software has more to do with image quality than most anything else these days unless you're talking large, high-end sensors.

In case you're wondering, I've been a serious amateur photog for 40 years, been shooting digital since the days of the EOS D60 (not 60D, which doesn't exist), and currently own 3 digital SLRs. I have a little bit of knowledge here.

So in those 40 years, do a camera's megapixels determine the quality of a picture taken?

And BTW, less noise = better picture.

Quoted for empahsis. And preach on brother!

Why is this thread 13 pages?

iphone has one of the best cameras on a smart phone right now. Doesn't make the Evo's camera bad (well the 720p video is pretty sub par IMO) but if you are happy with it, you know you don't have to be the best in all categories.

To your first question: No. The only think more megapixels do is give you the ability to make bigger enlargements. With a 3 MP, you can make prints up to 4x6, maybe 5x7 without noticing pixellation. At 6 MP, you can get up to 8x10, maybe 11x14. Is anyone likely to use a cell phone to make prints larger than that? I doubt it.

(If you're viewing images on a monitor, the same thing is true, although perceived sharpness has a lot to do with the monitor, not just the image file.)

But because consumers have come to (incorrectly) equate pixels with quality, manufacturers are in a MP race, usually to the detriment of image quality an the consumer.

To your second comment, less noise is only ONE of many factors in picture quality. I could easily demonstrate a picture that has more noise, but is superior in other respects (color, contrast, sharpness, exposure) than a lower noise shot. People wouldn't likely choose the low noise picture as "better."

And noise is only really an issue shooting in dim light, at higher ISO settings. In daylight, you're not likely to see significant noise from any of the current crop of phones.

Holy crap what a bunch of misinformation. First of all, the camera has a lot less to do with the results than the photographer does. Anyone can easily make one camera or another look bad without much effort. Just knowing what conditions one camera does well in (iPhone = low light, Evo = outdoor) and shooting in a favorable environment will skew the results. Taking good pictures is 90% photographer, 10% camera.

Don't believe me? Take the word of a pro then. Take a look at this -

With the right guy behind the camera, any camera can take beautiful images. I have no doubt that this guy could do the same thing with an Evo and no one would be able to tell the difference between an Evo and a iPhone.

Couldn't have said it better. I actually had a chance to mess with the iPhone 4 over the weekend again and I'll admit it does have a better camera. BUT after about 30 minutes and 50 pictures taken on both the iPhone and Evo (same pics) and putting them on the computer and messing around with them it's impossible to not only tell which is better but it's just as hard to tell the pics were taken from a phone and not from a high end camera. At the end of the day they both have great cameras. While the iPhone 4 may have an advantage they're both VERY good cameras and with the right photographer anything is possible.
