My first android phone is a "free" Tb

So I've been intrigued with android for a long time, but I had a pre2 and a pre plus before that. So, I didn't feel like spending time learning a new os, and spending money for the same apps I've already bought for a different platform (broke college kid lol). But when I saw the bestbuy sale for a same as free Tb, I jumped at the chance. I was a little skeptical using my upgrade on a 8 month old phone. I wanted the rezound, but again, a broke, barely-staying-on-top-of-the-rent, college guy, can't be to picky. I've had it now for almosta full day and Im loving the hardware, and Im sure android will keep growing on me. I do have a few questions though. 1. Did I make a good choice for this being my first android phone and of course my budget constraints lol. I have 14 days to exchange it, and my budget would narrow my choices to the Revolution, Stratosphere, and the Breakoutt since a big reason Im even upgrading is Lte 4g 2. I'm fairly comfortable with command lines, and I had preware installed on both my pre's and over-clocked/under-volted them both. How much different/harder is rooting andriod? Of course Im planning on researching and reading up on the process before I try anything. I was just curious.

First off...congrats and welcome. There is NOTHING wrong with the TBolt at all. People just want the new shinny thing they see in the window. The TBolt has a few years left of usefullness. I would definately put the phone to the test and text alot and download apps etc. to see if it is what it is suppose to be to you. I have had my Tbolt for 8 months and I love it....and while the Nexus is coming out next month, I am not in too much of a hurry to get one.

The only the phone I have rooted was a Samsung Omnia running WinMo 6.1 and that was very easy. I had the original Droid and never bothered rooting it. My Tbolt is running das BAMF Forever 1.0.9 (which coincidently is from the same developer that I ran on my Omnia). There are many many ROMS out there to run.....if you ask 10 people in this forum, you will get 10 different opinions.

If you are comfortable with command lines and your way around a phone OS......rooting the Tbolt will be NO problem. If you get stuck, just ask questions around here.

The Thunderbolt is a fine choice. I have one. Although, if you could've afforded $50 more, you can get the Rezound, which, imo, is well worth the extra $50 for the dual core, hd display (highest ppi of any phone currently on the market and even the upcoming gn. Beats audio is kinda meh from the reviews, but hey, you do get a pair of $100 headphones free.

You made an excellent choice. I got mine in August on my upgrade. I love it!

The thunderbolt was the most fun I've had yet rooting.

You have to set up an Android debugging bridge from your computer, downgrade the firmware, rewrite the bootloader, and unlock the nand. It's a lot of copy and paste fun!

Oh, and anytime you flash something other than a Sense Rom, you have to get a gps lock as you boot into recovery, or gps no workie.

Who has the rezound for $50, I would be all over that!

Via Thunderbolt!

Welcome, I too am coming from a Pre2 and Pre+ before that :) Im afraid we're gonna miss WebOS for a little bit, but hopefully Droid will grow on us. I purchased to TB as well, but then found the Rezound sale and bought 1 of those too, so I have 1 each coming, if the TB looks to be in good condition (bought it preowned) I'll give it to my GF who is on a pre2 right now too. It seems there are a lot of pre users coming over. Atleast I'll still have my Touchpad to play with :p

Apparently Costco had a deal where the Rezound was available for 50 bucks, but looks like it is over now (saw a thread on it earlier).

The meant that the ReZound is $50 more than the Thnderbolt.....in store. But since the OP got them free....it is a moot point!

for clarification, the ReZound was $50 on upgrade.

Of course, the tb was free on upgrade.

Hence why I said that the Rezound is $50 more than the tb, but I bought the tb for $50. since some people seem to be confused about this, I posted a screen shot of my order.

yea, theres definately some things I'm missing but between the 4g, bigger better screen, any app I could want, and hopefully ICS, i think ill be sble to deal with the different OS. Although i do miss cards a lot, (find myself constantly swiping up to get rid of an app) and of course the touchstone. I did see some touchstone mods for android phones on youtube that didnt require voiding the warrenty, so eventually ill probably try one of them. And i also have my Touchpad to get my WebOs "fix" if i miss it too much lol.

I should have also stated that the verizon "upgrade" was only a one year equipment upgrade, and i wasnt truly eligible for a new phone at the full discounted price. But, i begged and pleaded with the really nice BestBuy girl, (ended up she knew my older brother) and she did some kind of "ghost" contract and then added it to the family plan i'm on with some "wizardry" lol. So even though i'd love to have the Rezound over the TB, i highly doubt i could have gotten the "upgrade" price anywhere else.
And as i stated in my above post, i'm pretty satisfied with the TB so far. And i'm sure i havent even begun to figure out everything Android has to offer.
