My Galaxy Grand is Device memory shows "USED SPACE: 12.29 GB" when the total device capacity is 8GB

Galaxy Grand Duos (jelly bean 4.2.2) has a device memory (internal) of 8GB. However when I check in Settings > More > Storage; I find something strange:

Device memory:
Total Space Capacity 8 GB
System Memory: 3.96 GB
USED SPACE: 12.29 GB
cached Data: 40.39 MB

How is my phone showing me "USED SPACE: 12.29 GB" when the total device capacity is 8GB out of which only 4 GB is usable internally.

Can anyone help me explain this?

Do you have an SD card inserted?

I am using a 8 GB memory card. All my apps are on my phone memory and the settings show me sd card used and free space separately.

Did you buy it brand new/used from the store or did someone sell it to you?

I bought a new phone in May 2013 and ordered online from Samsung estore. infact I had done a master reset twice and after reset it shows correct used space but as i start installing my apps, this is the mess that gets displayed always. In actual; I am using 1.7 GB out of 4 GB (usable). Is this the cause of my device freezing suddenly in between though the freezing happens very rarely?

Has anyone else identified this in their cellphone GT-I9082 (Samsung Galaxy Grand). I would recommend everyone to check on this. I have JellyBean 4.2.2 upgraded.

Hey All,
I too had a lot of problems and fed of trying a lot. As per Samsung Executive, the binary does not get updated with the version / update / upgrade patches. This is a universal problem with Samsung Android Devices. Esp. galaxy grand I-9082 devices. hence, I went to the Samsung Service Center and they updated my software. Now the device work awesome. I would suggest to go to Samsung Service Center.

If in warranty: Free software update
If out of warranty: 150 INR

hey I'm facing the same problem with my Galaxy Grand. Mine weirdly shows USED SPACE as 91.93GB where as the Total Space Capacity is only 8GB.

Any suggestions please ???

Mine is showing 136gb used space that the known issue identified by manufactures also. to resolve it they will provide us kitkat(4.4) upgraded version for device.. cheers.

So I started to download a software update patch 2 days ago and then the phone crashed. Showed that the memory was full. Deleted some old files (videos and pics) still had to delete some app. Yet it still showed the memory as 12GB (without the memory card) when the device has a 8GB internal memory. Similar problem as described herein. Last evening the phone refused to switch on. Just got the samsung logo boot up screen and didnt move beyond. Had to opt in for a factory reset and lost a lot of data. Was under warranty so did not have to pay, but guess this is a common problem with this model.

Another regular problem that I used to face is that the address book disappeared / refused to load. Happens quite often, lets hope now with this factory reset. This problem too shall be solved.

Really unsatisfied with the grand.

I have the same problem with my galaxy grand. however when i investigated, found that the Gallery is showing that much data as used data.
I am using android jelly bin and compared with S2 and S3 which is having same operating system but problem doesnt exists in S2 and S3.

i am also facing the same problem On grand Duos..Im on Jelly Bean 4.2.2..understand as of now it cant be updraged to Kitkat (develper version is available though)
Further there are some apps which are installed but i dont find them as a short cut. Eg. Google Earth. What to do for both the issues???

Have you tried Clearing the data from setting/application manager/gallery/CLEAR DATA (as seen in this screenshots).?
Is it working after Clearing the data..?
I think the problem is may be beacause of the backup storage of the images in gallery.
