my gnex took a fall!

I have the Otterbox Defender and I have troubles with Google Wallet while it's still in the Defender case. The NFC and the reader are trying to communicate, but I haven't been able to get it to complete a transaction while still in the case (I have been successful without the case).

Yeah I think you are the guy I had read about having issues with the bigger cases and NFC. That is why I asked about the smaller cases. I use wallet as my main walking around money source and need it to work (I dont want to go back to my real wallet). And with my wife having a gnex also it is easier for me to share stuff with her using beam. It seems most of the users of the smaller cases have had no trouble with NFC so that is encouraging.

I dropped mine on the fifth day I had it. It was charging on my counter, standing next to it I turned and caught the cord with my shirt tail. BAM! Like I threw it. I see it bounce across the lenolium. In a fit of cursing I only found a scuff on one corner. A nick between the power button and the screen. Having landed screen down I only found one scratch next to the speaker so small it looks like a speck of dust.

Even though it has battle scars I'm still going naked. I carry it in a micro fiber bag for screen protection.

I would venture to guess that any of the silicone/non-hard plastic cases would work reasonably well.

You have 30 days from purchase to add phone insurance. Add it.

I have insurance....its a small scuff and a little crack though. I realize the need to put a case on it now so those will be covered and the phone is no worse for the wear really.... so I dont feel like paying the deductible or whatever. Of course if it gets worse and the crack grows then i will use the insurance. It just sucks that my pretty phone now has some ugly to it and I have to cover it all up just to preserve it.

Well unlike you guys my story is a little worse! Fisrt night i had the phone i was doing a littlw drinking and i fumbled the phone onto some gravel. It shattered the screen im the upper right corner in between the ear piece and the forward facing camera! Needless to say my replacement phone should be here today!

Oh man, that is a pretty bad story.

And that's why you don't drop your phone.

Ouch....didnt even make it through the first night. That sucks man.

Yup I was pretty mad with myself! First phone I have ever cracked the screen on! FML I'm patiently waiting for the ups guy to bring me my replacement I'm kinda scared that they might have sent the wrong phone as the lady on the phone couldn't even find the GNEX at first!

Well as the thread title suggests my naked gnex took its first big fall today. Im 6'4 and I was holding it in front of my face when I turned quickly, hit my elbow on the car door, and fumbled the Gnex. My Nexus then proceeded to fall nearly straight down landing directly on the bottom left corner and then sliding a few feet down my driveway. It hit HARD!!!

It has a mark where it hit and a miniscule, hairline crack. It also got an almost undetectable scratch on the screen right above the speaker. Im nearly sick. But for as hard as it hit and from the height it fell Im fairly impressed it is not in peices. It took the fall about as well as my old droid would have. Needless to say I ordered a case for mine and my wifes and had them overnighted so I can get them on tomorrow. I do not need to find out if this thing can handle any more falls and unfortunately when I look at my phone anymore the only thing I can see is the mark on the corner......so Ill protect it and hide the mark with a case.

For the holiday season, Verizon extended their return policy to January 15th. You can do one of two things. If the damage is not that noticeable, you can go to a corporate store and complain that the phone randomly restarts and that you have factory reset twice already; or you can just return it, pay the $35 restocking fee, and get a brand new scratch / dent free nexus that way. I had the edge of a brick scratch mine yesterday and i went and got a brand new one for no charge today. I didn't have to pay the $35 restocking fee but it would piss me off so much to look at the screen like that for the next year that I would have paid easily.

I had mine in between my legs in the car. I was half asleep when I got out and forgot it was there. I felt it falling and at first didn't realize what it was. Then it hit and I knew it was my phone. I felt sick to my stomach as I picked it up. It landed face down, but the main part of the screen has not scratches. The bottom part of the glass that is black in the right corner has scuffs and 2 of the corners of the phone have marks. My wife could see how upset I was and told me to use the insurance. I'm tempted to tell them I lost it, pay the $100 for a new phone and keep this one to just mess with.
I definitely have a hard time looking at the phone with the marks. It's not all pretty anymore. LOL.

Anybody know if the smaller cases affect the NFC for things like wallet and stuff? I heard a monster like the otterbox defender would not allow the nfc to work correctly but anybody using wallet and beam with normal size cases?

I just got the otterbox defender myself tonight...no idea if it works with wallet yet but android beam still does using nfc...i will check on wallet with the defender and report back.

My og droid took some falls similar to what my Nexus took today and it got dented and scratched too....of course it did not crack....but mine hit close to the thin plastic by the screen so that is why it cracked. That being said....this phone is nowhere near the tank that the OG droid was. I thought I could go naked but that is not an option anymore......Ill learn to live with a case so my Nexus will make it to my next upgrade.

I'll probably keep this phone forever. The hardware should be relevant for years. <5" Screens aren't going to super-HD resolutions anytime soon, and hexa-core phones aren't going to suddenly make phones run games at 120FPS while still having great battery life. And 15-40Mbps download speeds won't be irrelevant for a very, very long time. And guess what? Because it's a Nexus device, we'll have a top-tier developer community for at least 2 years.

Eventually I'll replace it as my daily driver, but I'll probably be able to use it the next 3-5 years.

i probably could use this phone forever.....but......it will be hard in 18 months knowing there are more powerful beasts out their and maybe they will have some as of yet unthought of new feature and i will have an upgrade....and.....well you see where this is going dont you. Yep me walking into a verizon store to use my phone to buy a....uh....phone :)

Google wallet works fine with the otter box defender installed....checked on my way home tonight no problems!!

I dropped my first IPhone 4 on the concrete driveway outside a clients house. I had a cheap case and the zagg invisible shield on it. The drop didn't harm it at all, it just scuffed up the case and crinkled the zagg shield. I think the zagg actually absorbed the shock and may have helped protect the glass. I always drop my phone sooner or later but I haven't dropped this one yet.

Glad to hear the Defender works with Google Wallet (at least for one poster, not so much with the other). That means it ought to work with the Commuter.

I dropped mine a bunch of times in my drunken stupor at the bar. I use the hard case vzw sells... no scratches, no dings.

Got a diztronic case on with a seidio surface case and ghost armor screen protector coming. Diztronic looks fairly good and is sleek.....but gives me little or no comfort it would do much if i dropped it again. It seems good to keep the scratches off and maybe help a small fall but it aint got much beef to it. Yep still paranoid....i cant go otterbox defender....but i may end up with the commuter depending on what this seidio looks like.....only thing i dont like about this phone is its not the tank my og droid was.....its prettier and more fragile, which i like.......as long as im not a klutz and tossing my phone down the driveway.
