My impressions with the samsung epic 4g

I don't think anybody was talking about that. He said the width of the hardware is very similar even though the Evo has "more screen real estate" as in, the screen is bigger on the Evo than the Epic. Nobody said anything about how many pixels are on it...

Thanks for the review and such. I am wondering how much better the keyboard is to use over the moment. I temporarily transferred to a spare moment I had and it is an OK phone but I cannot stand the keyboard at all.

This will be one of the first things I do when I get mine.

The keyboard is a ton better than the moment's, you'll definitely like this keyboard because it's bigger and keys have a more tactile feel to them. If there is one complaint about the keyboard it would be that it is to big and for some it may be hard to stretch their fingers across the keyboard, but it's also a good thing. The epic is only very slightly smaller than the evo in terms of size and it's also thicker, so as long as you don't mind holding an evo you won't really have any trouble using the keyboard.

And what I mean by screen real estate is that the the evo's screen takes up more space on the same plastic casing of the phone i.e. less wasted plastic

How did you change this setting?

You go into the settings, go to language and keyboard and go to I believe keyboard time out. Select that and choose "same as screen timeout."

so the front capacitive key lights are tied into the backlit keyboard lights? Maybe that's why they have it set to shut off earlier than the screen, so it doesn't drain the battery too fast...

After reading comments the last week or so, I was going to dig around in the settings and look for those bottom buttons. I was hoping there was a setting. Unfortunately, the person got called away and had to leave. Good to hear it's there.

I will say this, though. After using Swype on my Hero for the last 2 months, I found Swype on the Epic to be awesome. I was typing faster on it than the keyboard (obviously not used to the physical keyboard yet). It was running so smooth and quick.

Can you confirm that the Epic 4g can utilize the tv-out feature through the 3.5mm jacks likr the other Galaxy S phones?

Also, is there a way to make the capacitive button back lights dimmer and noit brighter?

Benchmarks: Upon the first linpack test I got like 7.2 and the second one was around 8.008 or something like that. For quadrant I got 969.

Wow that's fantastic! My Moment gets around 3-5 MFLOPS stock, and about 9.5 with JIT (yes I'm rooted lol). Can't wait for this beast!

This post is contrary to what other sites are reporting. Did you get this from BriefMobile because they seem to be one of the only ones reporting that this feature is not included. I'm just trying to be optimistic, but couldn't the settings for TV out be placed somewhere else? Maybe the Epic has this ability, but Samsung doesn't want to activate it yet?

My question is: Do they have a TV out cable? Nowhere in their little article do they mention that they tested it, just that there is no setting for it.

This is yet another thing we will have to add with the jailbreak.

I have already bought way too many half finished products. Theo nyl problem is that the Evo really isn't much better, and has a ton of issues of its own.

It doesn't matter to me. As long as the hardware supports it, then I KNOW there will be a work-around. Apparently, the option was there in a previous build:

I really hope that what the reviewers are getting is a final beta or something because if this is THE final release, then we have half baked software on our hands with fully baked hardware.

The Nokia N800 had amazing hardware, but nokia made it useless with terrible software support.

The Palm Pre had great software, but the hardware sucked and they ruined that as well.

I want a gadget with good hardware and good software. On day one.

If we can get tv-out and samsung music on the Epic through hacking, Ill be satisfied. I hope 2.2 update adds these to the Epic by default

Why would Samsung make a video out cable if the phone does not have video out capability? This thread is the first I heard of this feature being removed, and without further proof, I will continue to beleive that video out via a cable will be supported by Samsung.

Unfortunately, we cannot get a confirmation from Samsung until the device is released. The 3-prong video out cable they sell on-line for $20 says it will work for the captivate and the vibrant, but none of the accessories (including bluetooth devices) are supported by the epic. I wouldn't buy accessories yet until we get the phone in hand.
