My individual contact notification tones disappeared after updating to Oreo?

Just had another update today on my Samsung 8 note. Was hoping they would bring back my individual contact tones that they randomly took away thinking that was somehow good idea. And nope, that didn't. I seriously hate android/google/who ever deleted that code and super helpful feature. I hope you wake up with dry eyes. Ugh!

After the last one that came through, I am now also having issues with assigning specific ringtones to my contacts. Anyone else?

I went in to look and all of mine were back to default! C'mon now, it's like salt in the wound! How can these things not be caught during testing! It appears i can reassign them but I shouldn't have to int he first place!

Unacceptable Android !
Please fix it !!
I had to switch to Google Messages for Android phones for my default text app.
It gives you back personalized notification sounds.
Huge pain

Ed Parr: Thanks SO much Ed. I did exactly as you did. Now using Google Messages and have my notification sounds back. Can't thank you enough !

The option is now available if you want to do a little work for it, otherwise you can wait for the update to show up.

If you want it now, google search "Samsung Messages Version 4.4.30.5" and then download the .apk and enable internet app installation. Once its done you can assign the separate notifications a different sound!

NOTICE: It is set on a per-conversation basis, so it WILL disappear when you delete the text thread. So they did the easy way out which still took forever. They proved themselves liars by saying it couldnt be done. Yes, I am happy I can use the function but they better be searching for a way to properly fix it the RIGHT way, becuase to me there is still a lot of ill will I can't forgive when my phone contract ends.

The version that I found is Samsung Messages 5.0.21.18. It turned my messages app icon blue. It says that's the latest version and you are able to add ringtone back to text conversation. I probably should have waited for the official update. Lol

I'm pissed off, this happened to me after my update as well. As a business owner who is in front of clients often, and also has 2 sick parents, it is important to me to know who is contacting me without always having to interrupt things by looking at my phone.

I tried Textra but they use the default tone in group threads ( no help) so I have downloaded Go SMS Pro and am trying that.

Samsung needs to correct this error ASAP.

Hi everyone I am new on this site and I couldn't help it but to post what I found that will help you set different sounds for individual contacts.

Oreo (Android version 8) has removed the notification setting and Samsung contacts have no more option to set individual sounds. I was disappointed myself because I used this feature. I decided to update the messages and then managed to stumble across where it can be set again. Update your messages to version 4.4.30.5 (On Samsung phone) and it will give you the option to set the notification for each contact but its done in a different way then doing it through contacts. Follow the steps below...

Updating messages.

Go into messages, click the 3 dots in the top right hand side screen, settings, about messages and update to version 4.4.30.5 if it asks you to.

Changing the notification.

Step 1. Go into messages and select any message from someone in the list. (message trail).
2. Click the 3 dots in the top right hand side of the screen.
3. Select notifications, then choose custom
4. Then select the settings wheel on the right and there you will have the option to choose a different sound and other items for that contact. This worked for me!

Hope this helps!!

Hi Conch, my phone is a Samsung S8. Originally it came installed with Android 7 (nougat). After updating to version 8, I had the same version as you for the messages. What phone do you have?

SL2 is right, I added the steps in my thread as well if that helps anyone reading this! Also, Galaxy Apps (Samsung Store) have this update. You need to sign in and search for messages, it will appear in the list and show the version like I mentioned.

I have OVER 100 Notification ringtones for customizations that Oreo did away with by taking away this
IMPORTANT FEATURE!!
MAD!!!!

they had better bring back this feature!!

used that appmirror site to get
Samsung messaging v5.0.21.18

it seems to work updated the installed version on my Galaxy S7... I found a option in messages to change the sound per message but NOT in contacts.. :(

I'm so pissed off by this, can't believe they took off the most important feature of my phone, if I don't know who messaged me, I have to check every single time, extremely annoying, if you delete the conversation for privacy, you got to wait till the person text you again to set another custom notification every single time, extremely annoying.

The update to the message app was ok, but they need to restore the feature to the contacts app. I do not want to set a message tone per thread, I want to set the message tone per contact. I'm on an S7 Edge and I'm not updating to Oreo. in fact, I was getting ready to buy a new S9, but not until they fix this

That's message settings, not contact settings. Delete the message, and you delete the custom message tone
