My Maxx Died Yesterday....Kinda

Yesterday I had the strangest thing happen. Called my wife and couldn't hear a thing while it was connecting. She answered and still couldn't hear and when she called back....still nothing.

I checked all the settings and the sounds played but at a low volume and incoming calls would ring but again at a reduced volume. Tryed a phone call on speaker and it worked OK.

Finally gave up, called Verizon and went throught the standard "try this" list before being connected to tier 2 support. Turns out there is a small but significant number of failures identical to what I am experiencing. Verizon is shipping out a new phone on Monday and wants mine back ASAP to put on the test rack.

There doesn't seem to be an answer to this problem but the thinking is that it's a software glitch. Bottom line if this happens to you a replacement phone is in order.

Thanks for the heads up. Its weird because my girlfriend had a similar problem with her phone, but she uses an iPhone.

Did you make sure you weren't getting a refurbished phone?

Nope, didn't think about that plus I'm not sure why I would care if it's refurbished or not. Most often, refurbished items have gone though a more rigorous QA inspection than the new ones, So in that respect they are intrinsically less prone to problems.

You should care though.....

When you bought your phone, did you pay a premium for a new in box phone or a pre owned?

Don't kid yourself, they don't do any other tests than they do in manufacturing. Flash whatever software and make sure its working.

Just like a car, when its been rebuilt from whatever issue.....nobody wants it, and you gotta take a hit to get rid of it.
Obvious its less severe from car to phone but I'm sure I'm not the only one who doesn't feel like I should accept used when I paid full price for a item

For what it's worth, when I had to get a replacement for my old Droid Incredible, the refurbished unit I got worked perfectly.

Agreed, I had to get a refurbished MAXX because the volume key was jacked. My replacement came and it had a terrible build quality. The black stripping pushed in and creaked horrible on every side and every plastic panel including the top moved. Called verizon just to notate account as it felt like it was falling apart. Received another device because Verizon said that's unacceptable quality and this one was built as solid as a rock. At least until I turned it on and the ear speaker was blown. Received another one which I'm now and again, like the original, moving panels and its like this right out of the box. Unacceptable, another phone comes tomorrow.

I can live with a little creak, but my whole phone sounding like a piece of crap that skipped quality control is unacceptable. These RAZR phones have the worst refurbished units I've ever dealt with. Never have I had a phone feel like its falling apart in my life.

I'd blame Verizon. The screen on my first GN refurb looked like it travelled through the asteroid belt on the way to my apartment. Completely unacceptable.

I did blame Verizon and the tech support I spoke with for this last replacement was very apologetic and understanding. Due to my other phones not being in their warehouse yet, he was not able to order the device until Friday and I tried to order it on Wednesday originally. He called me on Thursday to notify me he could not order it and than followed up on Friday to tell me the order was placed. Best service I've ever received from Verizon support to be honest.

My phone is never dropped and always looks brand new even a year later. I should not receive a unit that feels cheaper than a GEO METRO.

I sell IPhones at a major retailer. I find that 95% of customers who complain about not hearing never removed the original screen protector. It just happens to cover the ear hole. Sad thing is, none of them believe me they could overlook it... I get a chuckle every time

I had a problem with my old Palm Treo and Verizon had to replace it three times and that one was bad as well. They told me they have a policy that after three defective replacements, the next one is new out of the box. That's what I received, and it worked perfectly until I got the Original Droid.

Since then I've had a Droid X2 and now the Razr Maxx, and all three have worked reliably.

This new replacement has moving parts but by now I expect it. What I don't appreciate is that the SIM door isn't flush and is recessed slightly. Oh well, I called Verizon and they offered me yet another replacement but I told them I'm fine but I did tell them the RAZR apparently needs a different packaging and/or replacements need better quality control. Also got my account notated so if the door falls off as it feels loose, they will replace it. I'm just so sick of this and I know another replacement will push me back to square one.

This problem is getting a bit more wierd. Yesterday the phone fixed itself and is now working fine. I called Verizon and asked for a tier 2 person, was immediatly connected and explained what was going on. Asked if they still wanted it back and they said yes. Also asked if the replacement was new or refurbished and they said refurbished but if I'm not pleased just call and another would be sent so I'm OK with that.

I'll be getting my third Maxx today. The battery "burned" up and the phone wouldn't reboot. I'm hoping it didn't destroy the SIM Card and/or SD card. I'll find out in another couple of hours.

Both of these phones had the exact same problem. It would start rebooting itself with "No Service" and never get it back but kept getting hotter and hotter. The first one did eventually reboot itself but the second (refurbished) one never did reboot itself and the battery eventually went down to 0%. I was hoping once it cooled off that it would work again but no such luck.

Hopefully, third time's a charm! If not, I'll be requesting a new replacement (or an iphone).
